M. Night Shyamalan Uses Unbreakable 2 Storyline for Night Chronicles

M. Night Shyamalan uses his Unbreakable 2 storyline for Night Chronicles
The "Night Chronicles" film series may have dropped M. Night Shyamalan from their title, but the writer/director still rests at the heart of this horror anthology that debuts September 17th with Devil. While out promoting Devil, which will be followed by Twelve Strangers sometime next year, M. Night Shyamalan talked about the proposed, as-yet titled third film in the series, which he told MTV owed its villain to the never produced Unbreakable 2.

The director didn't have any qualms in stating that he basically cannibalized Unbreakable 2's script for this future project, which does not yet have a writer or director attached. He felt that the sequel would never happen, and that it was too good of an idea to pass up.

Here is what he said:

"I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to Unbreakable for one of the 'Night Chronicles'. It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for Unbreakable, and it was too much. There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, 'I'll make this the second flick.' I fleshed it out more and more, and thought, 'This could be a standalone movie!' I'll just say it: the third 'Night Chronicles' movie is what would have been the sequel to Unbreakable."

Asked whether or not this meant we'd never see Unbreakable 2, the director responded by saying:

"Literally, that's the question I get asked the most anywhere around the world - if I'm making the sequel to Unbreakable. I love that movie. Unbreakable and The Village are my favorite two movies of mine."

Devil was released September 17th, 2010 and stars Chris Messina, Logan Marshall-Green, Jenny O'Hara, Bojana Novakovic, Bokeem Woodbine, Geoffrey Arend, Jacob Vargas, Matt Craven. The film is directed by John Erick Dowdle.

CelluloidDreams, you just didn't get it. It was a movie about a more realistic super hero. I loved it. And like Night said, The village was my other favorite of his. They are both great movies and they are well done. I'm very disappointed that there won't be an Unbreakable 2. It was the first villain role, that you actually sympathize with but hate as well. Even if the movie ended without needing a sequel, I'd still like to see Willis' and Jackson's characters go up against each other again.

@TheFallen I can stand Emmerich and Sommers from time to time. Sommers' movies are pretty dumb, but stylish dumb, while Emmerich makes no bones about his movies being just as destructive as possible. I might be one of the rare few who got a kick out of 2012. Not for the acting, but the sheer destruction going on.

@REAL, understandable. Again, don't seem so offensive, I stated several times that the comment wasn't pertaining to you. Bay is definitely not a deep thinker. Still ,as you have said, I do like to turn off my brain from time to time for good old fashion action and entertainment. Some people would rather tune into Sommers, or Paul W.S. Anderson, Roland Emmerich, or hell, even Brett Ratner. But Bay seems to get the most hate, because he is the most successful cash wise. I just think the hate on this site, and others, is really one sided at times.

@Diaigma, understood buddy. I know you had a lot of faith invested in TLA

@TheREALavatah... i like what u said bout Sean Connery in The Rock, besides Ed Harris, Connery was the best part of the film and biggest bad ass from it, sorry mr cage

thats why im glad he was smart enough to retire due to the fact that he recognized the trend films were beginning to be just brain-less nonsense, specially after making League of Extrodinary Gentelman, where he announced his retirement, following disillusionment with the "idiots now in Hollywood"...his own words right there too

@Diaigma There was once upon a time where I thought M. Night was alright. But I now believe that the success of his previous work has made him believe he can put out just any old crap and people will eat it up because it's from him. They see his name and think "Oh, what will the big twist be this time?!". Again, I never got caught up in that thinking, to me he's just ho-hum.

Most of his dialogue makes me cringe, especially with the last 3 he's done, and it seems like its all downhill from here. If Devil is better then I give it credit for, I'm going to credit that to it at least not being directed by him.

@TheFallen You're absolutely right, I didn't care for either even before their recent movies. Bay is a simpleton who plays to simpleton people. His movies feel superficial, artificial, and are usually nothing but brainless mayhem. I can see that would have some appeal at times when you want to switch your mind off, but I'm a deep thinker, so that goes against what I look for in a movie. The last Bay film I thought was decent was The Rock, and only because Sean Connery carried everyone's asses.

It seemed the collaboration of M.Night and Willis would equal or surpass that of Carpenter and Russell after Unbreakable but sadly, for whatever reason, that never happened.

I love how when people hate on a film and someone refutes them, they say, "I saw an advanced screening" and/or "half (or more) of the people walked out." Its such a cliche excuse now. Sorry you didn't like Unbreakable, @Cell - but don't go as far as to make up crap to validate yourself. I saw it opening day. No one walked out. I saw it again. No one walked out. I don't know why I bother. Your taste in film is rather suspect anyway :P

I hated "Unbreakable" ...I remember seeing this film at an advance screning a week before the film hit the general pulic, & most people walked out, others laughed and their were maybe 2 or 3 that did like the film!

I went back and saw the film a month later, just thinking I missed someothing, or it was my mood that night... Nope just a really bad film!!!

    Nothing Memorable!!!

No argument, @Joby1508 - but if you think Unbreakable is the worst movie you've ever seen (which is quite extreme), you haven't seen many movies. I know 20 that are worse :P

@TheREALavatah - I remember you being quite stoked as well as I was, so I wonder if his resent crapfest has turned you off from ALL of his works. I really despise Sommers for similar reasons, but that doesn't automatically make Huck Finn and the first Mummy terrible.

@Fallen - that's how I feel exactly, though I'm less forgiving than you are :P

  17. The Narrator: The Better Man

I appreciate Unbreakable a lot because it was a "superhero" type film, written in a fascinating, real life sort of way. I mean every superhero type movie tries to be realistic, but Unbreakable is one of the few that actually pull it off. Even David (Bruce Willis) doesn't quite know/accept he's Unbreakable. And his villain? Mr. Glass? The guy who helped guide him to be a superhero. The man who is as frail as his alias. Played wonderfully by Samuel L. Jackson. I mean, it took some form of talent to create such a different type of film for the time.

and the reason I give Night credit is because, most users here (not you I'm sure), praised Night. Praised Michael Bay. Praised so and so. and when they come out with a slew of crap movies, or the general opinion of their films change, they sway just as easily as the tide. And I keep saying this, if you like a person in Hollywood, stick by them, or have a fully legit reason to think otherwise. Don't use recycled ideas of why he/she sucks simply because thats what everyone else is doing. Again, not pointed at you, I know you sorta disliked both creators before their recent films. Simply stating that I enjoyed Shyamalan's earliest films, and I still think he has potential to make a comeback.

@TheFallen I generally agree with you bro, but I think your building M. Night up more then he or his previous work is/was. Sixth Sense, Signs (to a degree, the baseball bat was pretty ridiculous and I didn't buy that at all), and Unbreakable were decent, but nothing earth shattering. I didn't feel that "tension" or "suspense" that others felt when I watched Sixth Sense. Was it good? Sure, for a single viewing. After that you know the big "twist".

Anyways, that's my take. You know I respect you, I just don't agree that M. Night was ever as good as some make him out to be. I honestly think he's become lazy with his writing and direction with the success of his earlier works, and it shows big time with the fiasco that was Last Airbender.

  19. The Narrator: The Better Man

@Adam_Lawson. The acting wasn't the only good thing those movies had going for it. It was their originality, and the way the characters were written, as well as Night's terrific execution when it came to key, suspenseful moments. Don't sell his early works short.

  20. The Narrator: The Better Man

Unbreakable was amazing. I hope a sequel is eventually made, just to further flesh out the rivalry of The Glass Man and our hero. AS for his best film, I think it was Unbreakable, followed by the Sixth Sense. Other than that, his other movies are okay to mediocre, to poor. But he has passion and creativity, and just needs a better film to channel it without losing it.

Thats funny because The Village was one of the worst movies I've seen in my entire life. M. Night is getting worse as time goes on. Same goes for the money-hungry James Cameron. I would have thought M. Night would have given up after hacking the crap out of The Last Airbender.

At this point in Shyamalan's career, almost every filmgoer has an unrequited hatred for the man and his crappy dialogue, but of that majority, almost everyone would agree that Unbreakable is his best film.
