M. Night Shyamalan Reveals Plans for The Last Airbender

M. Night Shyamalan, best known for his thriller films with their twist endings like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and The Happening, has just finished the screenplay for The Last Airbender, his adaptation of the very popular Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Shyamalan told MTV about the direction he's taking the film - or rather series of films, since he intends for the tale to be told over three films.

"I'm supposed to write the second one this Fall when we're prepping," he said, noting that the first film will hit theaters in July 2010. "I don't want it to feel like 'Oh, the first one made a lot of money, let's make another one.' It's not that at all. This is a story told over three movies. A very clear, Shakespearean story that's told over three movies. And for me, that's when a franchise works the best, like The Lord of the Rings. It's when it's all plotted out in advance [that sequels work], and this is the clarity of what we're doing."

Shyamalan also reveals that one of the things he is looking forward most to with the series is the ability to show that he is able to create films that don't follow his typical pattern. "What's great about doing something like that is that let's say your instinct is to distill me down into three characteristics: thrillers, scary, twist. Let's just say, 'Oh, that's what he does,'" Shyamalan explained. "Then when they come see The Last Airbender - which has none of those three things in there - and yet, you'll be able to tell in 30 seconds that I directed it. Now you'll have to go, 'Wait, I realize there are other things that define him. [Things] I knew, but was never really acknowledging them on the same level as these other characteristics.'"

The director is also quick to explain that The Last Airbender, while it may be based on a cartoon aimed at children, is not simply "kid's stuff", which was often said to be true of the animated series as well. "The spirituality, the centering on relationships and family, on inherent optimism. Things like that, you'll see," he explained. "It seems like an odd fit [for me], but when you see the movie, literally, it's full of Buddhist philosophy, it has all this stuff. All the elemental stuff that really lends itself to...almost a Hindu kind of connotations; there's a lot of Hinduism in it. So suddenly you'll see those kind of things in the [future] movies, and I think it'll reflect really well and make the relationship more accurate and more complex, which will be a great thing."

The Last Airbender tells the story of the successor to a long line of Avatars who must put aside his irresponsible ways and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations. Based on the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, the film is being directed by M. Night Shyamalan, and will hit theatres in 2010.

The Last Airbender was released July 1st, 2010 and stars Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel, Cliff Curtis, Nicola Peltz, Randall Duk Kim, Jessica Andres, Noah Ringer, Seychelle Gabriel. The film is directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

You know, if Night is smart, he will film all 3 at once, or in close sequence, since the series takes place over the course of a year.

Just like what they did for LOTR. The story in that Trilogy spans 2 years, and they filmed all three of them, within 2 years. True actor age to story ratio. BRILLIANT!

Guess we have a bunch of dumbasses on this thread. You all need to stop making stupid comments about how Shyamalan's ability to write stories is declining. Like Vamp has stated several times.... he is NOT creating a story. ITS ALREADY THERE. He just needs to transfer it to the big screen. There will be nothing original about it. The story IS NOT his.

Now.... I totally agree his twists, plots, and stories are declining but that has NOTHING to do with this movie (or trilogy). We're just going to see HIS vision of the story... but its not HIS STORY. Try to get that through your thick skulls. Poor Vamp is killing himself trying to explain that to some of you thick headed numbskulls.

Fair enough, scab. There are some people who gave The Dark Knight an "F" rating on Yahoo, so there will always be people who don't appreciate an incredible story :P

Someone needs to copy and paste Cell's comment for future reference. I'll bet he'll be commenting that this movie sucked in 2010 when it comes out.... which means he was bullsh*tting when he says "I will never ever waster a dime on another M. Night Shyamalan film!" haha

We'll just have to wait til July 2010 to see if he really DOESN'T go see it.

I have a feeling that Cell doesn't read anyone else's posts, otherwise he would have prevented himself from making such an erroneous comment. You might wanna look into what people are saying about a topic, Cell, before you make yourself look like an imbecilic troglidite. And yes...that is a word.

Book 1 was so good, I bought the whole series on Amazon just now. :) Again, Vamp, thanks for the acknowledgment.

    Well Cell, that's where you're wrong.....AGAIN.

"The Last Airbender" has already got an established storyline, as Diaigma helpfully pointed out, and so it's not another convoluted f*cking story from M. Night Shyamalan. Also, "The Happening" was an awesome movie.

Anyway, I look forward to this movie almost as much as "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" and "Twilight." AND THAT'S A SH*TLOAD. Can't wait to hear more about this.

Ever since that crap film, "The Happening", which just happend to be so far, 1 of the "Worst" films of 2008! (& People thought "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" was bad...LOL!??!?.)..I will never ever waster a dime on another M. Night Shyamalan film!

"The Last Airbender" sounds like another convoluted story from M. Night Shyamalan!

  17. HESSIAN

Shyamalan is a very gifted director who tapped into his best stuff in the beginning. He has slipped a bit since then. Lady in the Water was...not f*ckin good. The Happening was ok, I don't know if I buy it totally, sure its a movie, but it doesn't work %100, and Wahlberg's acting was sub par. I think he needs to step it back up.

I like Avatar it was awesome!!! wish they made a few more episodes to explain the last few question we all have but this film if done right and good casting a a awesome story will be one of the best films of 2010.

Good point, killerman, but you're forgetting one important thing...

This will be the first film (or set of films) that's based on an already established storyline, aka, ADAPTION! Night has only done HIS OWN stories until now...originals. Since he is working with the creators of Airbender, I doubt that this will be a bad trilogy.

So what films have you made, killer? If you had started at the age of 5, you'd be a legit director by now...better than Spielberg even!

And thanks black-moon, Anarchist. I'm right 99.999...% of the time, but it's nice to be acknowledged for it.

I have little nephews and nieces who always watch nickelodeon - so while spending time with them I watched a few episodes of Avatar. I was immediately hooked. If M. Night can bring the story and world of Avatar to life (exempting some of the more ridiculous childish moments) we will have an excellent trilogy on his hands.

Yeah, I am stoked for this one.

"Yet, you'll be able to tell in 30 seconds that I directed it."... So it's going to suck....

  23. Mieko_Siede

Not to sound sinister or anything, but I partially agree with Killerman. I would look forward to this movie if I thought it was in the hands of a director capable of pulling the story off on every end. Visually, story, action, and direction. I don't think M. Night has it. But I'll be watching as more develops on this. He may just prove me wrong.

  24. The Anarchist

    Book 1 = film 1
    Book 2 = film 2
    Book 3 = film 3
That's the only way to do it.
    2010? But that's so far away . :(
And I agree with Diaigma, but I don't think it'll happen. I mean, it's still a Nickelodeon movie...

The worst director in history award goes to... You would think with a name like M. Night Shyamalan he would be a master of thriller films. Not one of his movies was enjoyable. He thinks when he's directing that he's giving the audience intelligent stories. I could've directed his films at the age of 5. He needs to turn the lights out on his career.

I just finished Book 1: Water the other day and...WOW! I could not believe that it was a kid's show on Nickelodeon. Heck, I wouldn't even call it a kid's show! If Night can combine all of season 1 into one film, that will be an amazing feat. I'm just hoping the film version will be adult oriented, like LOTR.
