M. Night Shyamalan and MCR Form the Night Chronicles

M. Night Shyamalan and Media Rights Capital have joined forces to create the Night Chronicles, which will see one thriller made per year for the next three years. According to Variety, Shyamalan will produce and write the films, but he will choose a different director for each one.

This will be the first time the director has produced something he has written without actually directing it himself. While he will create the stories and ideas to be used in the thriller, the chosen director will have to come up with a finished screenplay on his own. Both Shyamalan and MRC will retain full artistic control over the projects.

President of MRC Tory Metzger stated, "These films will be based on ideas in keeping with what has made Night so successful, and has made him unique to his time." At this time, M. Night has two ideas that he would like to turn into films. The production company will be based near Philadelphia.

Not as much of a fan anymore. The Happening really let me down.

I'm glad he's limiting himself to one role. Though I'd much rather see his direct films he didn't write.

    M. Night Shyamalan is a good writer with some brilliant concepts. But it often ends with the concept. His movies don't leave me feeling fulfilled. The Village, The Happening, those were going somewhere, but in his scheme of things, trying to sell a psychological mind-f*ck he loses it. Unbreakable had a good concept, but it didn't deliver for me visually as he was trying to tell it. We were all caught off-guard with The Sixth Sense which introduced this love affair we had with him early in his career. But now that movie doesn't grip me, it doesn't hold me. It was just a different style. Lady in the Water had some interesting themes to it. The dealing with prophecy and the mysteries layered in this world that we as man are ignorant to, perhaps even willfully at times was a timeless but well directed concept. But it became predictable and preachy. His characters tend to favor in some way from one movie to the next. I agree, he doesn't allow you to get involved enough to care for his characters which is one of the turn offs. You don't care one way or the other if they live or die. His dialog becomes too much in the body of the movie instead of letting some of the scenery do the story telling. I understand what he tries to do with it, I understand the plots completely, it just becomes a bit much. His movies just drag in a monotone sense. But there are those moments when he just grips you, and those are the moments that keep you in the movie and kind of allow yourself to dismiss the negatives. I think Signs is the only movie he's made that I almost fully liked. But when we search for a mind chaser we allow his antics to hold us the reason why he will always be in the chair be it director or producer because his box-office sales keeps it that way. Am I an M.Night fan, no, not really. But I do think has talent and a unique vision. Would I accept an opportunity to allow him to turn one of my books into a big screen adaptation, maybe, maybe not. I don't think his vision is broad enough. He's just one of those people that has to do things his way, it is on the audience to either take it or leave it.

    nice.

to clarify i didnt mean to imply that i thought it was an award winner.

i liked it on a b-movie level, like the way one likes movies like the gate, or the man with the screaming brain, or that movie joshua (the fangoria movie, not the sam rockwell movie- the sam rockwell 'joshua' was an actual bonafide 'good' movie).
