Louis Leterrier wants to direct Y: The Last Man
"I'm surprised that it hasn't gotten made yet," Leterrier said. "The first time I read it, I was in France and doing my little movies, and I didn't think I would ever have access to these kinds of movies. Midway through Clash of the Titans, I was like, 'What's going on with 'Y The Last Man'?' I called one of the producers and asked what was going on, and he said it was available. I said, 'Let's go!'"
"D.J. Caruso was supposed to do it with Shia LaBeouf, and that sort of went on and was over, so I went in and said, 'Please, please let me have it!'" he explained.
"It's kind of stuck somewhere now," said the filmmaker. "I still want to do it. I'm passionate about it. But it's stuck. People don't know what to do with it. I'd love to do it, but I need people to finance it, and the people financing it don't know if it's a TV show a movie, or what it should be. It could play as a movie, but it would be very interesting as a TV show," he said. "[It wouldn't work as] one large film, no. I'd love to do it as a TV show or a three-part series."
"I like the idea of a TV show," he continued. "You take time to get to know your characters. You can introduce a lot of characters. You don't need your three-action set pieces that you usually need for movies. Frankly, with HBO and Showtime and cable shows, the DVD box sets and all, you can have a product that doesn't make you feel like as soon as it's projected, it's thrown away. It's really a piece of art."

What do you want to see Y: The Last Man as? A TV show or a film?

As for the whole show or movie thing, I still say film trilogy. Sure it will cut out quite a bit from the series. But They have a lot of story arcs/characters to choose from to feature in said trilogy. This would give it a huge budget, a huge audience, and would really bring forth the epic scope that the comics had. I mean every man in the world just died. I want to see that on the big screen.
Now the tv show also has its up side- less cut scenes, better pacing, more character development. However, its a big risk because unless its adapted right (refer to The Walking Dead), it will come off as cheap and no one will tune in. This is a hit or miss potential franchise, and at least on the big screen it has a bigger chance of hitting.
Thats me thou, and I'm a huge Y fan, so the general audience may disagree with me.

Agreed @Insert.
Let's not forget in TIH Nortan was going against Leterrier and the producers/writers, because apparently he knew the character better than they did, and believed they could do better. Apparently it got him fired? Was it out of place? Slightly. Was Nortan right? YEs. . So I really don't want this guy touching Y.

Yea a mini series would do but not on syfy they got crappy graphics, HBO seem to have too much on their plate with all the shows and movies they doing, showtime might be able to do it or even starz. Get a legend syfy director/producer to help out, then we all go.

@ejk1 - the 1982 Clash was AWESOMENESS in its complete unabashed cheesy, swords & sandals glory.
Blasphemer...:p

God, Leterrier - after your sh*t, piss-arse remake - oops, "reboot" - of my beloved Clash of the Titans, you should never be allowed near a director's chair. Ever. AGAIN.

Clash of the Titans could have been epic. It was sh*t. Yes, Leterrier had some rough source material to deal with, and an even rougher script...so rough, I think the original movie is better than that filth. However, as director, doesn't he have the power to change the script or demand a re-write? The story was soooooo wrong. I even think TIH's success was more due to Norton than Leterrier.
I haven't read the comic, but from what I know of it, wouldn't it make a better TV show? Maybe on HBO or AMC?

The Narrator: The Better Man
@ejk, I understand that, but Leterrier didn't do anything special with TIH either. If it weren't for a fast paced script and a solid cast, the film could have easily been mediocre or less. So I am willing to wait for someone else to take the director reigns. As I said, I have no problem with him producing and getting the ball rolling.

i dunno about letterier guys. he's good with action but he kinda does a cheese ball job with everything else. clash of the nar nar was sick but it could have been waaaaay sicker. ZackSnyder would have owned that movie. but as for this, a three part series would be down. like the way The Pacific was done on HBO. Spielberg produced it and got like ten different directors. one for each part of the mini-series. shia's a good actor. he'd be badass with a little monkey sidekick ha ha. f*gs

@Narrator, yes look at Clash of the Titans, and then look at the source material, the 1982 film. I'm sorry, but both movies were horrible. I don't find Leterrier at fault for something that was going to be a dud no matter who directed it. And remember, so far he's the only guy in the running. If someone else appears on the horizon that wants this project, then by all means he should be considered. But if no other candidate materializes, then it becomes a matter of taking the chance with Leterrier, or no movie. Personally, I'm willing to take the chance.

Tv show idea would be perfect for this, regardless of who directs!

The Narrator: The Better Man
@ejk, he was passionate about Clash of the Titans. Look how that turned out. This is my favorite graphic novel series, and I for one am not gonna settle on Leterrier. He could produce, and get the ball rolling on it, but in no way should he direct the film. As for Shia starring, I agree, he is still perfect for the film.
@Cripple; read the series. It's fantastic.
Also, I do like his tv show idea. Just look at The Walking Dead. Turned out great, and its based off graphic novels as well. So again, I would not mind him executive producing the show or something, so long as he doesn't direct any sort of film trilogy. If they were to make a trilogy, my pick back in the day was David Fincher. His dark visual style would do wonders with the series, not to mention the source material. He is a pretty kick ass adapter, and can do R type projects with ease (which this series would need). But he's caught up with The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo films, so thats out. :/

@CBF, he wants to make it. No one else does. We may be in the minority, but at least now discussion can be had. And I agree about Shia. He could definitely do a great job with this project.

@ejk1 I agree. Leterrier made The Incredible Hulk the better green giant film, and I got faith in him. Also, Shia would still be perfect for this.

I know some people will not like the idea of Leterrier being the director here, but I say go for it Louis. Since it seems that no one else wants to make Y and you do, I hope you get the chance. Bring the passion to the project that you brought to the above story, and hopefully you will do justice to the comic book.
