Lionsgate Pursues Precious Expansion

Lionsgate is wasting no time on expanding the record-breaking box-office performance of its latest film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate will expand its hit indie film Precious with possibly a 1,200-theater rollout by November 20.

The film made a staggering $1.87 million from just 18 theaters, for a phenomenal per-screen average of $104,025, the highest per-screen average for any film in over three years. Lee Daniels' film will expand to five more markets this weekend, which will relate to, "a couple hundred theaters," according to Lionsgate president Joe Drake. It was said that the film could be expanded further the next weekend, in anywhere from 800 to 1,200 theaters on November 20.

According to Box Office Mojo, Precious' staggering per-screen average was the highest of all-time for a film released in more than six theaters, and the 12th highest ever.

Precious was released November 6th, 2009 and stars Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Sherri Shepherd, Lenny Kravitz, Stephanie Andujar, Chyna Layne. The film is directed by Lee Daniels.
