Leonard Nimoy to Retire from Acting

The 79-year-old Leonard Nimoy, best known as the actor who has portrayed Spock intermittently from the original Star Trek series in 1966, to his most recent appearance in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek film franchise reboot last year, has finally decided to retire once and for all.

Nimoy told the Toronto Sun:

"I want to get off the stage. Also, I don't think it would be fair to Zachary Quinto," he says, referring to the actor who portrayed a youthful Spock in last summer's smash Star Trek relaunch. "He's a terrific actor, he looks the part, and it's time to give him some space. And I'm very flattered the character will continue."

"I've been doing this professionally for 60 years," he says with a laugh. "I love the idea of going out on a positive note. I've had a great, great time."

"I was away from acting for 12 years, so I guess I was seducable," Nimoy says. "But since J.J. Abrams revived the Star Trek franchise, I felt I owed him something. And I'm glad I did it because he promised me a good story, and it was."

Don't expect to see him in 2012's Star Trek 2, as Nimoy just shot what will be his final appearance as enigmatic genius Dr. William Bell in TV's Fringe.

Star Trek 2 comes to theaters May 17th, 2013 and stars Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

I understand. I wouldn't want to work at 79 either.

Hell, I doubt I'll make it to 79 what with my nasty habit of smoking cigarettes while jumping tigers on a flaming motorcycle into a vat of toxic waste only to fist fight robots on my way out. It's a disease.

I have been a loyal fan of both Wars and Trek, I remember when I first started to watch Star Trek, despite Will, Leonard felt like a better actor. I've seen every trek episode even the ones where it reaches into Next Gen.
For new fans, Leonard guest stared on one or two of Next Generation as an Older Spock. JJ did an awesome job with getting him back in the saddle for one last outing. Before I sign off, a few other Trek actors have had guest shots as well. Bones was on the first episode of Next Gen, James 'Scotty' had a guest shot as well.
Now with the new film and waiting for a second, I would love to see Will Shatner come back for one last outing.
Have a happy retirement Leonard, Live Long and Prosper.

@AnnoyingFilmritic for the most part I don't agree with your posts, respectively... but I'll be damned if you didn't hit this one on the head. Same, was a solid fan of Star Wars in the 70's and everyone knows from that time, you were either SW or ST. However, everyone could appreciate Spock's character regardless your team. Hard to explain, but it was like today's Team Jacob or Team Edward, just a lot less gay. "In Search Of", well done, freakin' classic memory there. Hate to see him go, but wish him the best.

damn it all. Hopefully they'll wrap up his part on Fringe, he's such an important character. I also wasn't a Star Trek fan until I saw the new one

NIMOY'S FINAL FRONTIER- It was nice to see Nimoy play Mr. Spock one last time at least. I'm fairly certain that he believed that he wouldn't be able to play Spock ever again, but fortunately J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot made it possible. His acting talent as well as the great effort of the film compliments each other very well. This film made me a Star Trek fan, so its nice a pioneering figure of the franchise appear effectively in its revival. Nimoy signs out but the galaxy of Star Trek will always have his tracks!

I was never a Star Trek fan until the 2009 reboot (I'm a die hard Star Wars fan since the 70's) but, I've always respected Leonard Nimoy as an actor & intellectual (& In Search Of TV show fan from the 70s). He's bowing out at his second Hollywood peak, for which I have tremendous respect for...at the risk of Star Wars heresy...Live long & Prosper Nimoy!!

He's probably retiring to pimp it out...I saw him one day on my way home from work outside of port authority in manhattan...with a pretty (definitely former bombshells) older woman on each arm strolling.

Sucks that he's done acting, but good for him.
