Lenny Kravitz has signed on to portray musical legend Marvin Gaye in an untitled biopic directed by Julien Temple (Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten). This will be the singer's first lead role, after supporting turns in Precious and this year's The Hunger Games.
Lenny Kravitz will portray Martin Gaye in an untitled biopic
The drama will focus on Marvin Gaye's quest to battle his addictions and get his career back on track in the 1980s, with the help of London music promoter Freddy Cousaert. The singer was shot and killed by his father on April 1, 1984. It isn't clear who is writing the screenplay, although the musical rights to all of Marvin Gaye's songs have been acquired.
This isn't Hollywood's first attempt at a Marvin Gaye biopic. F. Gary Gray was set to direct Marvin back in 2008, although the project is currently dead. Jesse L. Martin was slated to portray the singer in Sexual Healing about the late singer's life, before the project collapsed.
Lenny Kravitz will next be seen in Lee Daniels' The Butler and the upcoming sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
