Legendary Pictures to Make a Jimi Hendrix Biopic

Variety reports that Legendary Pictures is putting together a feature film about Jimi Hendrix.

The film will be shepherded by Legendary president Thomas Tull. Max Borenstein is writing the screenplay.

Apparently, rights issues have presented barriers to previous Hendrix projects. The plan is for Legendary to develop the film, and then hopefully get the consent from the estate. It looks like Experience Hendrix, the people that own the musician's estate, haven't been easy to make a deal with. Janie Hendrix, Jimi's stepsister, currently runs the venture.

Legendary has been talking with the estate in a cursory manner, but there is no rights deal in place as of yet. This would be needed to access the musician's music.

Wood Harris played Hendrix in a TV biopic called Hendrix. If this is to be actually filmed, I'd like to see Jamie Hector as Jimi Hendrix. For those who don't know Hector, he portrayed Marlo Stanfield in The Wire (HBO) and Knox in the "Villains" story arc of Heroes, season three.
