Lauren Shuler Donner Talks Wolverine Sequel

Empire recently got to speak with X-Men Origins: Wolverine producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who revealed some interesting tidbits on a sequel, including the film's writer, Christopher McQuarrie.

"That's the furthest along of all the X-Men projects on the boil. It's actually the story we wanted to use for the first Wolverine film, but [Fox head honcho] Tom Rothman preferred to set the character up with an origin story first. This movie will really focus on the relationship between Wolverine and Mariko, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord, and what happens to him in Japan. We're very fortunate to have a story mostly outlined for us [from the comic book arc co-written by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller]. And we wanted an A+ writer, so we want to Chris McQuarrie (Valkyrie, The Usual Suspects). He came in and has tightened the story and got really immersed in the whole thing - he's in Japan in his head!

We want to make it authentic so I think it's very likely we'll be shooting in Japan. Also, by the way, we are looking to have the Japanese Fox executives involved in helping and counselling us, because it's a different culture and we don't want to portray the way they speak, dress and act in an inaccurate way. I think it's likely the characters will speak English rather than Japanese with subtitles."

I wasn't trashing on him, I just shouldn't have to decypher what he's trying to say because of missing words and funky spacing etc.

Origins was exactly what we thought it would be: an introduction for the uninitiated. On the same token it had multiple plot points and characters that linked it to the X-Men franchise. As for the story of Wolverine 2, i'm really liking this idea.

I enjoyed Wolverine but I can see why some people would think it's bad. Personally I didn't love it, Jackman needs to get to the core of the character and have little or no lines.
The character is hard in so many ways, he's a loner, he's a Canadian, and has a temper to boot. Actually he sounds a lot like me.
With a better direction, the franchise can be saved plus Logan isn't a pretty boy like Jackman. He does a good job, but still he's not the right person for the job.

I wish these people would read the comic's before writing the and making the film.

Origins was terrible. There is no need to defend a movie that had the potential to save this franchise and instead not only f*cked the pooch but ripped it a new one. Fox, let it die after a Magneto movie.

i liked origins as well but a lot of the effects REALLY needed work and could have looked a lot better. here's to hoping that they're better in the sequel.

Origins wasn't that bad. McQuarrie is good writer to have on the job.

I really hope this is true. My brother and I can't stop talking about how bad Orgins was. McQuarrie is a great writer. I recommend watching the first five minutes of The Way of the Gun. Especially with the commentary on. This franchise character needs McQuarrie's edge.

Awesome. Please make up for Origins. There's serious potential with this movies story and its writer. The comic was cool, keep this from turning ape sh*t. And get a director who can tackle this. Please.
