Lauren Shuler Donner Discusses Magneto & Constantine 2

Lauren Shuler Donner has immersed herself in the world of comic-book adaptations, serving as producer on X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and with upcoming projects including a sequel to Constantine and X-Men: First Class, as well as X-Men Origins: Magneto. Donner spoke to SCI-FI Wire where she discussed her upcoming projects, as well as talked about some of the rumors behind X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Shuler Donner said that the future of Magneto was somewhat dependent on the success of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, although she did say that X-Men Origins: Magneto has a fantastic script. But she emphasized that focus has been on getting X-Men Origins: Wolverine out the door first, and that X-Men: First Class is the first priority, despite not even having seen a first draft yet.

Asked what attracted her to X-Men: First Class, Shuler Donner said "I like kids. I did produce Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo's Fire. I do like those kind of teenage movies; I really do. Part of it takes me to my roots. It's action. There seems, to me, to be more humor, or more potential for humor. I really like that idea. The relationship ... I don't want to get into what the script is about, but it provides a bit of a lighter touch to the franchise."

As far as Constantine 2, Shuller Donner only said "Looks very good. Thinking about it. Looking for a writer."

Shuler Donner also discussed the rumor that her husband, Richard Donner, ended up partially taking over for Gavin Hood as director on X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Richard Donner, of course, had directed the original Superman film for Warner Brothers, so he is no stranger to superhero films. According to Shuler Donner, Richard Donner didn't take over, but did act as support for Gavin Hood. "These movies are really hard. If you're a 10-time director, they're hard. Gavin is a newer director, and new to the breadth and the scope and the visual effects and the size of this kind of movie, and the cast and the physical effects, everything," she said. "So Dick served a really good purpose. He, A, helped me out and, B, he was sort of there to help grandfather it through. If Gavin needed any help or some muscle on his side or anything like that, Dick was there."

Finally, Shuler Donner did give her take on what X-Men Origins: Wolverine is actually about. "This one is really is about, for him, for Wolverine, the animal versus the human. If you mistreat a human being long enough, can they maintain their humanity? He being part animal anyway, he grapples with that. Am I man or am I an animal? That's at the heart of this."

Leading up to the events of X-Men, X-Men Origins: Wolverine tells the story of Wolverine's epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe. The movie stars Hugh Jackman, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, will.i.am, Dominic Monaghan, and Daniel Henney.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine hits theaters May 1st, 2009.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was released May 1st, 2009 and stars Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Will i Am, Lynn Collins, Kevin Durand, Dominic Monaghan, Taylor Kitsch. The film is directed by Gavin Hood.

Constantine 2! So happy to hear this is in the works. First one was great. Gotta bring back Keanu and Peter Stormare as Satan though.

Looking forward to a Magneto film. Can see that being pretty epic. As for x-men kids.. not so much. I don't like those kind of teenage movies - I really don't. Why try and make light hearted family films with a franchise that can be so much more.

Shelley, it will. Trust me. Hands down with the right writer/director duo, it will be better. There's so much more to work with, and alot better mythos and just all around more arousing.

Sorry, but Hugh Jackman doesn't save Origins: Wolverine.

I disagree, Magneto will be a good film and I will see it, but there is no way it will be better than Wolverine.

bad idea moving forward with X-Men: First Class
i thought the whole plan was to start a new franchise...X-Men Origins
soooo maybe they should go with the Magneto origin story so that ppl will start picking up with the idea that they're making Origin story movies now....DUH!
First Class could be cool but how could their adventures as teenagers be better than the ones they went through in the first 3 X-Men movies? they should think about making a movie about the new breed of mutants that Wolverine and Storm are mentoring that X3 ended with.
btw Cyclops never should of died....awful

Wow Magneto would be absolutley amazing better than Wolverine just based on back story and character depth alone there is so much to work with. Constantine 2 needs more action the first one was decent but too slow for me. X-Men: First Class sounds terrible this is not the f*cking OC ok Miss.Donner. We do not want to see Iceman/Rogue/Shadowcat love triangle cause we don't give a f*ck i wanna see badass mutant fights and a solid story no weepy teen drama bullcrap

Magneto has potential for a good story. Constantine 2 sounds good but only if Keeanue comes back. As for X-men first class sounds like a waste of movie and idea is lame.
