Outspoken Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter took the stage earlier tonight at PaleyFest 2012 to discuss Season 5 of the hit FX biker drama. He also revealed there are still plans in the works to create a Sons of Anarchy prequel series, although that won't happen until the main show has ended. Here's what he had to say below.
Kurt Sutter wants a Sons of Anarchy prequel series
"I had this notion of wanting to explore the first nine. I see it as a different show - not a continuation or another version of Sons of Anarchy but a more political and socially historical sort of show. I definitely have some interest in doing it. I'd like to explore it in some capacity."
Kurt Sutter also added that no one in the current Sons of Anarchy cast would show up in the prequel series. While the prequel is still a ways off, with the creator/showrunner recently inking a deal with FX that renews SOA until (at least) Season 6, Kurt Sutter teased that Sons of Anarchy Season 5 will focus on Jax (Charlie Hunnam) and Tara (Maggie Siff) being the new leaders of SAMCRO.
The dynamic that will play out this season will see Jax at the head of the table and the struggles he has in being kind. Basically, the question will be, 'Can Jax be the leader of an organized crime family and not become (Ron Perlman's) Clay?'"
Another major Season 5 arc will include the fallout from Tig (Kim Coates) accidentally killing Damon Pope's daughter.
Other Season 5 bits revealed:
- Sutter stood by his decision to not have Opie join Jax at the table in the finale.
"I felt that it wasn't true to [Opie's] character to have him come in the room and sit at that table," he said. "He's a soulful, deep-thinking kind of guy. For him to get all of that information from Jax, it didn't make sense that he would be able to rectify that within a couple hours and sit at that table. This season we'll get to see how [their] relationship has changed and [whether or not Opie] can come back from that."
- On Tig and Gemma:
"There's always been an attraction" between Tig and Gemma, acknowledged Sutter, "[But] I don't know where that's going to go."
- Sorry, Otto lovers. Sutter said it's unlikely we'll see much of his nearly-blind alter ego next season.
- Sutter, a former The Shield exec producer, said that while he is still close with Michael Chiklis, he doesn't really see a world in which he could appear on Sons.
I just feel like Michael's character was so iconic on [The Shield], it would be really difficult to bring him on [Sons of Anarchy] and not have him overshadow as Vic Mackey... I love Michael, but that would be a tough one."
FX hasn't announced when Sons of Anarchy Season 5 will debut yet, but sparks will surely be flying in Charming when the show returns.
