Kim Cattrall won't commit to a Sex and the City feature film
On Monday, HBO pulled the plug on the pic's development after Cattrall made it clear she wouldn't commit to the project, which was to be written and directed by Michael Patrick King.
"Kim felt fortunate to have enjoyed six wonderful years, both personally and professionally, playing Samantha on 'Sex and the City,' " said Cattrall spokeswoman Marvet Britto. "She would have loved to have done the movie and made a deal to do the movie, but waited as long as possible with no script or start date and felt she had to take other offers that were presented to her after the hold period had passed. Kim would of course love to do the film and would be happy to revisit the project in the future."
However, other sources say that in this case, timing wasn't everything.
When King turned in his story for the film, HBO liked his take, but asked the four actresses -- Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and Cattrall -- for a couple of extra weeks beyond the hold period before moving forward on the project.
That was fine by everyone except Cattrall, who now said she couldn't commit to the project without script approval.
None of the actresses had script approval. However, as the film's star, Parker was to be paid more than the other three. Cattrall sought parity on this point and was rejected.
Britto denied that there were any additional reasons for Cattrall's decision.
HBO was unwilling to consider replacing Cattrall, or to go through the time and effort of developing a script without her firm commitment. So HBO chose the lesser of all evils: the network killed the project.
Cattrall is shooting Ice Princess in Toronto for Walt Disney Pictures and she plans to produce a documentary, Sexual Intelligence.
