Kevin Feige Teases Plans for 'Marvel's The Avengers' Villain Thanos

The Marvel executive reveals there is a place for the Mad Titan, though he won't reveal in which movie he will turn up in next.

The end credits of Marvel's The Avengers featured a last-second glimpse at the super villain behind all the chaos, Thanos. Marvel Studios president and Marvel's The Avengers producer Kevin Feige revealed there certainly was a reason for the last-second reveal, and that the Mad Titan will be hanging around for awhile.

"Clearly, there's a purpose to us putting him in the end of that movie. We do have plans for him. I wouldn't say we ever feel the need to rush anything one way or the other. We succeeded in Phase One because we stuck to our guns and stuck to the plan. That plan took place over many, many years and it ultimately paid off. I see Phase Two unfolding in the same way of us taking our time, us doing what's right for each individual movie, while folding in elements that will not only build up to the culmination of Phase Two, but even Phase Three."

The producer wouldn't reveal specifically if Thanos is appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy or The Avengers 2. However, he did say they will probably recast the role, played briefly by Damion Poitier in the end-credit scene.

"I think we feel pretty free to recast. That was cast for literally that one shot. Depending on what the role requires from future movies, we'll go from there."

Kevin Feige also revealed how pleased he was that Thanos' reveal led to new fans delving deeper into the Marvel comic book world for more information on the character.

"Suddenly, you have a million people who had never heard of an Infinity Gauntlet or a Mad Titan learning those terms. I love that. I love when the experience goes beyond the movie theater and encourages people to look deeper into our universe. I was equally excited by the notion that people went out and tried shawarma for the first time."

Marvel's The Avengers was released May 4th, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

@matchstick76 I think that Thanos will be the main villain in The Avengers 2. Once he showed up on screen at the end of The Avengers movie, i was under the ipression that he ould be the main villain in the Avengers 2.

@comicbookfan it sounds to me like a very good read!!! I need to figure out where I want to go comic wise after I get through Batman! I am thinking about Y: The Last Man graphic novels. Not exactly your everyday hero comic, but truly filled with epic tales for sure!

@mcleve02 True, lol, I probably will. They are coming out with a DC Omnibus of the Geoff Johns run on The Flash. All 4 story arcs.

@comicbookfan yeah man! I am really enjoying it right now!!! This is very rich in story. The connections between Talia and Bruce are chilling. Or relationship I should say!!! I am really enjoying this read!

Dude I freaking love Firefly!!! And I miss the show too! It's what brough Joss Whedon to my attention for the first time!!! Truly a great read for sure!!!!

I would say read the in between as well! Why not! There are subtle connections amongst all the comics. You're only expanding your comic knowledge that much more by reading more! Otherwise I revoke you CBF card XD

@mcleve02 Agreed on Dark Horse. I'm trying to get through Angel (I've watched all of Buffy) so I can continue on with After The Fall and Season 9. Then I will be starting the Firefly/Serenity series and comics. I'm just now sitting down and finally reading the Hal Jordan/Barry Allen stories of Green Lantern and The Flash, respectively. Both starting with Rebirth. I'm debating with Flash whether or not to go from Rebirth straight over to Flashpoint, or read the lackluster two arcs in-between. I've also been wondering where to start on WW. And dude, Son of the Demon is great, I just read part of that the other day. I'm debating on getting the trade that has The Demon Trilogy collected. Not sure if I will pick up the sequel Batman & Son.

Thanos may not be the main villain in Avengers 2. He'd probably just show up in the end like in the first movie which would make way for another big movie. Probably The Infinity Gauntlet which will include every one (heroes and villains [e.g Galactus, if they could get him back] in every movies they made by that time). That's just what I think. It would be cool though.

@comicbookfan Dark Horse has been doing a wonderful job of story telling and building their characters. They really should be getting just as much recognition as Marvel and DC at this point. Their comics are sllong, they have major motion pictures ( still craving more btw!!!) I am definitely there.

It's funny Flash and Green Lantern I have always looked at as Marvel characters trapped in a DC world haha... But my favorites will always be Batman first and Superman second as far DC is concerned... Batman and all his characters are definitely my favorites comic characters period... Btw I'm actually ready Son of the Demon now instead of the Killing Joke haha...! I changed my mind!

@mcleve02 Nice! Yeah I used to be a Make Mine Marvel kid but mostly because of Spidey and X-Men. When I learned about the awesome mythos of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and The Flash I was converted to DC. Now with both companies' epic mythology-screw ups, mistakes and relaunches, I'm neither. If anything I'm Dark Horse, which conveniently is located in my state, just 3 towns away from me.

@mcleve02 Well there are those of us that don't have the money to go out and buy the comics. We have to use it for more important things, especially when we can just go online and do all the "research" we need to.

They really have their crap together... and the problem is you ass douche that people are going onto wikipedia and such to research the character instead of buying the comics where they will get a real in depth understanding of the character!!!

  24. CBF

Kevin Feige, I hope you realize that people are only going out and rushing to see who the character is because you guys left it shrouded in mystery. A quick cliffhanger cameo setup, with a comic fan friend telling them "yeah that's Thanos," and people are going to want to do the research for Avengers 2. Don't expect them to do that with a character who's a major part of your movies, however. But of course, you most likely don't realize this. Cuz you're a douche who lies to the press about actors.

Did @the-movieghost say something about a BBQ? Dibs on a cheeseburger! Also, that link is great, and @ejk1 I'm signed up with Marvel.com, I believe I've edited parts of Black Cat's history. I usually use the Marvel and DC wikis myself, since DC likes to change their website around a lot (where did that trade list go?). Marvel.com has changed somewhat but relatively still the same. There used to be a lot more downloadable wallpapers, though.

@therealGoku Marvel just made an extension deal with Fox where they got the rights to Daredevil & Elektra reverted back to them while Fox opted to keep Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer & Galactus. So you may be right but if Fox doesn't do anything with the property like they have done for the last 5 years with it, then Marvel Studios will certainly have it by then.

@the-movieghost I am going to do you a favor. I'm gonna tell you a "not so secret" secret. Whenever I want to read up on a Marvel character, I go to this the Marvel Database. I am sending you the link to Thanos's page, so you can read his origins on Titan, his obsession with Death, an abstract entity in the Marvel U, and all of his infamous exploits. It's chock filled with backstory. Enjoy, my friend :)
