Just weeks after losing director Mark Romanek, Walt Disney Pictures is in talks with Kenneth Branagh to direct their live-action version of Cinderella. Mark Romanek left the project because his vision was too dark and edgy for the studio.

Cate Blanchett is still attached to play the wicked stepmother, although the production has still not found their title character yet. We reported in November that actresses such as Saoirse Ronan (The Host), Alicia Vikander (The Seventh Son), and Gabriella Wilde (Carrie) are in contention for the role.

If a deal is finalized, Kenneth Branagh will direct from a screenplay by Chris Weitz, who rewrote the original draft by Aline Brosh McKenna. Simon Kinberg is producing for Disney.

If everything falls into place, the studio hopes to start shooting in London this fall.

Cinderella comes to theaters in 2014 and stars Cate Blanchett, Lily James, Richard Madden. The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh.

@thedude-abides I agree, SH is my fav VGM to date as well. As far as capturing the spirit of game 1 and 2, I think it nailed it. A little plodding at times (which might have turned some audience members off) but filmed very well - a beautiful movie - and acted sufficiently.

I assume that it won't be too much of a dark movie, considering the recent news that this movie was going to be a dark movie and then Disney stepped in saying that they didn't want it to be too much of a dark movie when Mark Romanek was going to be the one to direct it and possibly make it that way.

@bawnian-dexeus Lol. Well, given the competition, that's not saying a whole lot. I don't even know of another vgm I would say I thought was good.

@bawnian-dexeus I wouldn't give it an excellent rating, but personally, I thought it was pretty bad ass. I don't think it's a great film, but I think it's easily the best vgm to date.

@bawnian-dexeus Yeah, don't get me started. Every video game adaptation other than Silent Hill has absolutely sucked.

I would have been interested if Snow White And The Huntsman wasn't such a dud. Ditto Hansel & Gretel. I'm wary of these fairy tale films now.
