Kathy Bates Joins The Day the Earth Stood Still

Bloody Disgusting has stumbled upon an exclusive bit of casting news tonight. It seems that Kathy Bates will be joining Keanu Reeves at the helm of his spaceship in the upcoming remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Will Smith's son Jaden Smith has also become attached to the project. The film is being directed by Scott Derrickson. The story will follow the adventures of an alien that arrives on earth to warn us that we are in danger of being destroyed by another planet.

The film is currently shooting in Vancouver, Canada.

The Day the Earth Stood Still was released December 12th, 2008 and stars Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, Jaden Smith, John Cleese, Jon Hamm, Kyle Chandler, Robert Knepper. The film is directed by Scott Derrickson.

    Okay, she was in the film for three seconds. I don't classify Wild Hogs as a Peter Fonda Movie (Or a good movie, for that matter) because he was in it for a grand total of three minutes. Her performance was obviously not memorable (not to say she isn't a memorable actress) but when making a list of examples of where one might review Kathy Bates' work, it might be best to disinclude the one where you could "blink and miss her" performance.

    Kathy Bates wasn't in Dick Tracy.
    The only way this movie gains merit is if Earth (by which I mean the Americans, because for some f*ck-awful reason we always get entrusted with being the vanguard of Earth to alien races. If I were visiting from nearby space, first place I'm going is Belgium or f*cking Switzerland, where the chances I'll get shot by some redneck who thinks I'm a commie agent are distinctly lower.) is destroyed because people were too stupid to listen.

    oh come on!!! so what if people sign on to do remakes? they don't know how the movie is gonna turn out till near release!! they see a script they like, so they sign on! all this sell-out bullsh*t is getting old!! in that case, every top actor in hollywood is a sell-out! so what? boycot every movie these actors are in?

    One cannot stop the wheels of the Hollywood Machine. I'm betting that there will be more special effects than good solid acting or story line in the new version. Keanu Reeves acting style fits the "Matrix Trilogy", however what I have seen of him in the spectrum of his career, he is a one note actor. Always the same. zzzzzz. The old version had no reliance on flashy explosions or bloody gore, gimmicks and gadgets but told a fantastic story by the actors. I am left wondering when I heard of this remake, where the creativity and talent for writing new great stories is, instead of re-making the already told stories for the current generation who rely on flash and dazzle and blowing things up. One more re-make. Sigh

    The reason she is a sell out is there is no point in re-making a classic film! IF you work in Hollywood your job should be not only making new films, but preserving the history of the classics!

    The Orginial was produced in the aftermath of World War II, the start of the Cold War, and the development and use of the first atomic bombs, the film strongly and iconically reflected the cultural fears of the time related to violence, politics, and the fear of global annihilation. Blended into the nuclear war scare are strong allusions to a Second Coming motif.
    I'm not fond of remakes. Plot and characterization are frequently sacrificed to make room for the real star of the show: the special effects. But there's really nothing anyone can do to stop filmmakers from revisiting old territory. You can, however, fail to support it at the box office. Dollars do speak louder than words in Hollywood.

    in case youre referring to me, i dont hate keanu.
    but i wont give him any more credit than he deserves.

    he was perfect in a scanner darkly because that character was delving deeper and deeper into a world of confusion as a result of the use of the substance d.
    but ive seen him in many movies and its always the same and rarely impressive.

    but thats not to say i didnt enjoy the hell out of point break, or the gift, or speed, hell i loved speed, i thought it was hilarious.

    i dont see why ppl constantly hate on keanu. Ive enjoyed a lot of his movies. He's had no Oscar-worthy roles yet, but to write him off as a mediocre actor is an over-statement, and says more about the lack of insight lots of people have.

    Why all the Hate for Keanu I think he is a pretty descent actor. All anyone can see is his first roles and he obviously did a great job at it since not many people can see past them. But then again his box office success does bring in a crowed which shows he has something as an actor. Kathy bates is no sell out I dont get why? If you ask me accepting the role in Fred claus was more of a mistake than this role I support all the actors and the film I can't wait to see it

    uh... why is kathy bates a sell out?

    my only disdain for this movie is the casting of keanu reeves, who only seems to be a good actor when he plays a character who is constantly confused. but the character he is playing in this one (i say this based on the original) is a very decisive and strong willed character who should be played by a decisive, strong willed, and substantially more intelligent actor.

    but, whatchagonnado, i guess.
