Joss Whedon Thinks the Ending of 'The Empire Strikes Back' Is Terrible

The 'The Avengers' director reveals that George Lucas committed a cardinal sin by not ending the sequel properly.

Filmmaker Joss Whedon has more than enough on his plate at the moment, as he gears up to start shooting The Avengers: Age of Ultron soon, and he has the new ABC series Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuting next month.

Regardless, the director took time out of his schedule to reveal that he isn't a fan of Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back's ending, where Luke Skywalker is revealed to be the son of Darth Vader, and Han Solo is frozen in carbonite.

"Empire committed the cardinal sin of not actually ending. Which at the time I was appalled by and I still think it was a terrible idea. Well, it's not an ending. It's a Come Back Next Week, or in three years. And that upsets me. I go to movies expecting to have a whole experience. If I want a movie that doesn't end I'll go to a French movie. That's a betrayal of trust to me. A movie has to be complete within itself, it can't just build off the first one or play variations."

The filmmaker did reveal that he thinks Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back is one of the few sequels that were done right, along with The Godfather: Part II, despite his issues with the ending.

He was also asked about his thoughts on The Twilight Saga, since he wrote the script for the 1992 movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer and created the 1997 Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series.

"A small part of you is like: 'Well, you know, I did that first. I liked that band before they were popular.' The thing about Buffy for me is - on a show-by-show basis - are there female characters who are being empowered, who are driving the narrative? The Twilight thing and a lot of these franchise attempts coming out, everything rests on what this girl will do, but she's completely passive, or not really knowing what the hell is going on. And that's incredibly frustrating to me because a lot of what's taking on the oeuvre of Buffy, is actually a reaction against it. Everything is there - except for the Buffy. A lot of things aimed at the younger kids is just Choosing Boyfriends: The Movie."

What do you think about the director's comments? Do you agree about the ending of Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back? Do you want to see Choosing Boyfriends: The Movie? Let us know!

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back was released May 21st, 1980 and stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker. The film is directed by Irvin Kershner.

Don't agree with his logic at all. Just because it doesn't conform to the archtypal Hollywood structure doesn't make it a lesser story. True, it's totally building up to Ep6 but it always was. And leaving the audience in a lurch wanting more is classic pageturner style storytelling.

I Dont Completely agree with What he's Saying, Especially since George Lucas planned for the Story to Continue but I Dont feel what he Said was Out of line and Sort of Agree. Getting Bent out of Shape and Saying Negative things about him is Basically Saying Worse Things that he Did! I Really like Joss as a Director too! And Support him Giving his Honest opinon even if it Wasnt the Most Popular One! :D

This is sacrilegious,.. Empire has perhaps the most epic and touching endings in movie history,.. Joss needs to rethink his whole consept of how to end amovie,.. i did not expect this from him, a fan of the saga,.. i think he has a few things to learn from Irvin`s storytelling/directing.. he is down a few notches on my respectometer now for sure..

Lets see if Joss can do any better 'That's right, I'm challenging him'.

In a way, yes, Empire was an "incomplete" movie that was left open ended, but it would have been nice to see it conclude some parts of the story.

A lot of trilogys have down the same with their first sequel, left it open for a 3rd, left questions unanswered. Empire did for me what a lot of sequels havnt done: thrown some wrenches into the works and basically left us with a big f*ck you! Darth Vader revealing that was a huge WHAAAT?! And Han Solo being frozen left the audience wondering how Luke and Leia were going to get him out of that mess.

Anyways, lol at Choosing Boyfriends: The Movie
