i wish speilberg got his mitts on this one first. not a big cruise fan but his war of the worlds was done very parallel to the book and surpassed all versions of movies on same. i think only he could capture certain elements of the original and translate them to modern times.

the earth would not stand still in 2008 . the movie needs to take place in 1951 with all its atomic age fears and filmed in black and white. this rediculous sounding remake can't possibly capture the fears, feelings and actions of an era. why not have paris hilton make an appearence as klaatus' mother with that big ass martian head of hers as long as you're bastardising one of the best films of all time

There is no "NASA official" in the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still". The wise doctor in the film was an Einstein type, university-affiliated, character, not a government bureaucrat. Having a NASA government official trying to help Klaatu is silly. A NASA official can't call together all the great scientists and intellectuals of the world because of international politics, which is the very problem Klaatu has come to earth to warn about. Prof. Jacob Barnhardt (in the original film), on the other hand, not being a government man, could unite them, which was one of the main points of the movie.
I can just see it now, the short taxicab chase scene in the original film will be expanded to fill the entire new movie, and we'll have just another "chase through the streets of Washington" film, with plenty of bombs going off, and lots of car wrecks and explosions and quick cuts in the editing, and loud booming sounds on the soundtrack. It will be yet another chase-and-explosion movie.

part of the beauty of the day the earth stood still is that they used the great michael rennie as klaatu because he was practically unknown to american movie goers at the time which gave the movie a more alien and other worldly feel.and whats with jennifer connoly ? do we really need eye candy before believable acting ability. i think you need to follow the old format, recast this disaster and stop trying to appeal to the tabloid reading version of the american movie goer. if you must use a well known person to play klaatu i think you should consider mr. david bowie if you dont you may as well say farewell to the master and hello to the dvd bargain bin coming soon to a super market near you.

I would really like to know how in the hell they are going to remake, let alone REVIVE this movie.. bring in a more up to date robot?? this should most definately suck, hollywood apparently hasnt considered the thought that some movies made back in the day, should STAY back in day.. not to be a remake with the likes of keanu reeves starring in it.. I think brad pitt with his look out of seven would fit a lot better than keanu, but then again they should just leave this movie alone

The movie is ranked seventh in Arthur C Clarke's List of the best Science-Fiction films of all time, just above Clarke's own 2001: A Space Odyssey. In 1995, this film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".

The Day the Earth Stood Still is a 1951 black-and-white science fiction film that tells the story of a humanoid alien who comes to Earth to warn its leaders not to take their conflicts into space, or they will face devastating consequences.
Produced in the aftermath of World War II, the start of the Cold War, and the development and use of the first atomic bombs, the film strongly and iconically reflected the cultural fears of the time related to violence, politics, and the fear of global annihilation. Blended into the nuclear war scare are strong allusions to a Second Coming motif.
The film stars Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, and Sam Jaffe. The supporting cast includes noted journalist Drew Pearson. Edmund H. North adapted Harry Bates's short story "Farewell to the Master" for the film, with Robert Wise directing. The score was composed by Bernard Herrmann and is notable for its use of two theremins.

You know what... I do think Keanu is a good choice for this movie. All joking aside... he does come across as a humanoid thing! That .. "Whoa.. Awesome Dude".. kinda persona fits the character. Keanu has that blank sorta stare and the dude in the original movie was kinda the same way.. (I mean the character in the original was that way.. I dont know anything about that actor).
So... this is probably a good match ... Keanu's real personality and the Humanoid!!!
Ahh ha ha ha ha...
But I'm really serious!!!

Any film Keanu Reeves touches turns into a really bad Z grade film.!! Ok "The Matrix", I give him credit for that, then Part 2 & 3 had to go!! Keanu Reeves with his surfer boy voice gets on my nerves! He turned "Dracula" into a comedy of Miscasting!!
