Jon Favreau to Direct The Avengers?

A new source claiming to be from inside Marvel has recently spoken up to leak all sorts of news about what's happening with the development of their superhero movies, including the fact that Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau is the presumptive director for The Avengers. The source, who spoke to Ain't It Cool News also gave an update on several other projects, including Iron Man 2, Thor and Fox's plans for the Daredevil and Fantastic Four franchises.

Here's what they had to say:
The Avengers is delayed a year because of financing issues but also because the plan is for Favreau to helm it. Everybody here loves the guy and he wants to do it, but it would have been impossible for him to do before the date change given his Iron Man 2 commitments. Also partly the reason why he agreed to do the Stark sequel on such an accelerated schedule was so he could get given first dibs on this. It would still be a punishing schedule for him, so hes not firmly confirmed yet, but he is certainly the presumptive director at this point.

Iron Man 2 starts rehearsals in a few days, which is why the casting is finally coming together so quickly.

Alexander Skargard is indeed Branagh's favorite to play Thor as some sites are reporting. If all goes well and it happens then we hope to get Stellan Skarsgard for Odin (though at present Odin is only a very small cameo part in this movie).

Loki will probably be played by Hartnett, if his pay negotiations work out. All the commentary about him wanting to do a Ledger and play a villain is B.S. though - WE APPROACHED HARTNETT because Branagh's a big fan of the Othello adaptation O where Hartnett played Iago who is very similar character wise to how he sees Loki.

Fox is serious about doing remakes of Daredevil and Fantastic Four. They have to make new movies with these characters every few years because otherwise the options will revert to us. This point is kinda obvious but Im not sure people realise it -I havent seen anybody pointing it out anywhere. The mood around here is pretty negative about Rothman's potential to execute these properties properly, (I'm sure you know why it might be particularly negative at the moment) but we are all hoping his recent promotion will mean hes kept away from direct control of these movies.

While most of this news has been mentioned before in one source or another, it's interesting to have it all compiled together and confirmed.

Iron Man 2 was released May 7th, 2010 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Jon Favreau.

Marvel's The Avengers comes to theaters May 4th, 2012 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr., Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

Thor was released May 6th, 2011 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan SkarsgÄrd, Kat Dennings, Clark Gregg, Idris Elba. The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Fox won't sell it if they can profit from it lol. It's obvious they are douchers from that Watchmen trial bs they pulled.

LOL Jefferson, Nolan hasn't even detailed yet on his return to do a third batman film, his too busy with his new film inception.

I'm with the people that state that Fox should give back the rights to Marvel, but either way if Fox doesn't do something quick with FF & DD then the rights will revert back to Marvel.
Which i'm praying to God Marvel get the rights back then that restores all the faith to the fans that the film will be excellent.

But why don't Marvel & Fox co-produce FF & DD together, 2 studios are better than one.

good to hear, but i think Marvel should get the rights back and re-do FF and DD instead of FOX. I believe they would do more justice to these films, as sample by iron man and the incredible hulk.

Daredevil needs to be remade before Fantastic Four. Daredevil needs a devoted comic fan and director. It needs good writers and a good plot. If I could choose, I would get David Hayter (X-Men and X2) and Alex Tse, who both wrote WATCHMEN. Cast I'm not so sure about. Director? I'm going with either Zack Snyder, Gavin Hood or McG.

Good choice Favreau is a faithful director and a really cool down to earth guy The Avengers would go smoothly with him at the helm. Daredevil granted i liked the first does need a lot of stylism and a gritty atmosphere i push for a hard R but with FOX that will never happen. MICHAEL C HALL FOR MATT MURDOCH/DAREDEVIL!!! I cannot stress that enough lol. Fantastic Four were always childish superheroes comics/TV show/ and movies alike so i don't really care if they reboot that one or not but hey Michael Bay could probably make a wicked Sci Fi action out of it

I'm with Cap25, although I know this would never happen as the rights were sold exclusively... But Favreau is an excellent choice for Avengers, as it is looking like Stark will be the leader anyways, and besides, Sam Jackson as Nick Fury!!

Yeah but you guyts keep in mind this is Fox doing the DD & FF reboots trust me they won't be anywhere near dark.
Thye'll probably be family films just with a bit of darkness, Fox try to attract the biggest auidence possible...they really don't care for the fans.

Hmmm VIS, you make good points on the director's for FF & DD, but i'd go with Synder for DD and Michael Bay for FF.
My reasons is Synder would do DD complete justice and stay faithful to it, just like he did with Watchmen & 300.
Michael Bay with a sci-fi action has proved to be a blowing all of our expectations away, Transformers is just an example, but action is what Bay does best.

Cool news. I'm not really interested in a FF reboot though.

  15. T.Clark

Well, DUH lol Favreau would be the best fit.

Daredevil needs to be a gritty rated R flick with some stylized fighting a la Watchmen, but no Snyder. I personally think one of the Scott bros.(Tony or Ridley, I'm leaning towards Tony), if they were up to doing a comic book movie, would treat the material the way it should be treated.

As for FF, it needs to be a sci-fi adventure movie...bring more science into it. Make it fun, but not kiddy fun, either. That's why Michael Bay could do it. He works best in sci-fi action as he's proven with Transformers. Joss Whedon can write...he did wonders with the X-Men in Astonishing

Yay I want a bad ass DareDevil movie! He is one of the coolest, darkest Marvel characters. They should make it artsy kinda like Watchmen in a sense. People might question what I just said but I noticed artsy stuff in Watchmen that I loved. Just the feel of the opening credits was cool, even before the movie actually began lol. I want a movie like that. DareDevil should be like The Crow dark. Not because of Batman, but because DareDevil's surroundings were dark and violent.

kool Favreau did awesome on Iron Man and Iron Man 2 will be just as good. So I think he's good for the Avengers as for FF and DD. Like I say before keep the cast of FF just rework the story that will save time and casting as for DD Go all out if they want I think Ben said he would not do a sequel so get some one else then.

Awesome news. Although I didn't think that the "DareDevil" and "Fantastic Four" movies were bad. I've never been much of a fan of Ben Affleck, but he did great in "DareDevil" in my opinion. I'm interested to see how they redo them, though. So in short, I'm looking forward to all these projects. BRING. THEM. ON! LMFAO!

It sounds like The Avengers is going to be a blast if if Jon Favreau is directing Iron Man 2 and then The Avengers....

Who is directing Iron Man 3?

Because Marvel have already confirmed and so have Jon Favreau (i think) that it will be a trilogy...

Favreau to direct The Avengers. He did a damn good job with Iron Man, why not? Not seeing a good future for Thor. Daredevil and Fantastic Four aren't that great-they need serious re boots (for all the up and coming comic fans in the world). I am looking forward to seeing Iron Man 2 and The Avengers (hopefully they get a good cast other than Downey Jr. and Sam Jackson). If Ed Norton returns as the Hulk whether a sequel or Avengers I'm definitely seeing it.
