Johnny Depp to Develop Dark Shadows

Warner Bros. is teaming with Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil production company to develop a feature based on the '60s daytime supernatural sudser Dark Shadows, according to Variety.

Over 1,225 episodes, Dark Shadows was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies. The show has a continuing rabid fan base that populates Dark Shadows Festival conventions. Numerous TV revivals of the series and pic adaptations have been attempted over the years but none with as high-wattage a star as Depp.

Depp has said in interviews that he has wanted to play Collins, the vampire patriarch of the series.

A rights deal just closed with the estate of Dan Curtis, the producer/director who created the soap that aired weekdays on ABC, from 1966 to 1971.

I am an huge huge fan of Dark Shadows and I love the idea of Depp playing Barnabus. I just hope they include time travel in the movie either by the Iching or by Quentins secret staircase. That is one thing I did not like about the old movies that they did not include the element of time travel.

I am thrilled to hear that Johnny Depp has bought Dark Shadows. I can hardly imagine the level of excitement and interest this will bring to the original series, its cast and new book and audio series.

Johnny Depp has long been on record as a huge Dark Shadows fan -- like Madonna, Tim Burton, Stephen King, Anne Rice and so many others who have dramatically impacted our culture since then.

My partner Eric G. and I co-host a 1-hour radio program for the American Radio Network every Saturday night called "The Alchemist's Playground." On Saturday, August 11th at 9 PM PST we will be interviewing Lara Parker (Angelique from the original show and author of two recent fiction books about Dark Shadows - "Angelqiue's Descent" and "The Salem Branch") in the studio on KCLA-FM 99.3 in Hollywood -- it is also broadcast on the Internet at http://www.kclafm.com. We will surely be talking about this latest development in the saga of Dark Shadows - as well as her book series, of course.

Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins... I could not believe my eyes when I read the new bit. There is no one else capable of playing that dark twisted soul as Johnny will be able to do...

Oh man, I used to watch Dark Shadows EVERY day! And, yes, Barnabas was the patriach in that he started the vampire line in the show and was the man character. Depp as a vampire? Sure, why not. His best movies, other than POTC series were Ninth Gate and From Hell. Some of the others have been questionable, but I wouldn't say he sucks. But if he's a vampire, I guess that's a good thing! LOL

Barnabas Collins was not a "patriarch." He had no children, nor was he the titular head of the family.
