John Waters to Develop Hairspray Sequel

New Line Cinema has inked a deal with Hairspray creator John Waters to write a treatment for a sequel to 2007's hit musical feature, according to Variety.

Planning to return are director-choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who will write new songs for the film.

No cast has been engaged yet, and none of the stars of Hairspray had sequel options. But the studio hopes to reunite the original cast in a film that will be ready for release by Warner Bros. in mid-July 2010.

The original starred John Travolta (dolled up in a fat suit to play Edna), Christopher Walken and Nikki Blonsky as well as Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Marsden, Amanda Bynes, Elijah Kelley and Allison Janney.

The goal of the sequel is to pick up the Baltimore saga of the Turnblad family after the resolution of the first film, which was set in 1962.

There won't be movement on hiring a screenwriter until Waters completes his work. Leslie Dixon scripted the original. No production date set.

    yeah.

everytime i closed my eyes, for a few days after seeing it, i saw that girl swishing poo around her nouth like she was eating ice cream.

ugh.... and then ... oh man... the other girl sticks her finger in her throat and pukes into the girls mouth... and then they make out.

    ew.

  8. Err

yeah thats one i always refused to watch.
i made a deal with a friend of mine who insists i must see it that if he hangs out and sits through it with me, and of course if we have some tree to go with the movie,
that under those circ*mstances i will watch it.

but i dont wanna see that monster eat poo either.
and i know it was real poo, too, it wasnt just like a neat trick to make it look real.

speaking of which, did you ever see '2girls 1 cup'?
itll rock your world, and not in a good way.

well.... i loves me some good camp, so in his own individual category id say he's an 11, but compared to folks like cronenberg or scorsese he obviously wouldnt score so high.

definitely check out 'a dirty shame', with johnny knoxville and selma blaire. its his most modern and easy to watch flick, plus its friggin hilarious, in my opinion.

Wow err.... for the exception of the 1988 version of Hairspray and Serial Mom, I don't think I've seen any of Water's movies. On a rating of 1 to 10, what do you think of him as a director.

  19. Err

musicals aside you should check out some other john waters movies like 'a dirty shame' 'pink flamingos' 'female trouble', et al.

reeeeal lowbrow humor, very amusing if youre in the mood for the stuff.

i hear you about musical though, i dont even like listening to regular music that has vocals except for a couple exceptions. just something about the sound of the voice in song just irritates me. plus when i listen to music id rather hear my own thoughts, not the faux-poetry of some douchebag rocker or m.c.

Whoa!! I just checked the numbers and The Dark Knight has made 203 million in FIVE days... It has now reached 200 million faster than any other movie in history breaking the record of eight days by Spiderman 2, Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith, and Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest.

NEXT UP... The record to 300 million. Which is 16 days by Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest. GO DARK KNIGHT!

i love john waters for all the hours of unorthodox entertainment that man has given me over the years, but f*ck this noise.

if he were to write AND direct i might check it out on dvd, but otherwise im not bothering with this storyline.
