John Rhys-Davies Won't Return for The Hobbit

While the prequel for The Lord of the Rings is being readied, it seems we won't see one of the actors from the previous trilogy reprise his role. Empire recently chatted with actor John Rhys-Davies, who revealed he won't be back as Gimli for The Hobbit.

"I've already been asked and to be honest with you, I wouldn't. I have already completely ruled it out. There's a sentimental part of me that would love to be involved again. Really I am not sure my face can take that sort of punishment any more."

The actor also revealed that he might be up for playing a much different role in the film.

I'd really prefer to play something quite different. Maybe an Elf. They've got a different set of problems with The Hobbit because you've got 13 dwarves, a whole band of them... You're trying to represent a whole race... You're trying to do for dwarves what The Lord of the Rings did for hobbits."

Of course he won't be because Gimlis not in The Hobbit. Neither is Legolas, Aragorn, Boromir or a lot of the key players from the LOTR trilogy. I hate all this speculation over whether or not characters that aren't in the book are going to be in the film. If they aren't in the story, then what the f*ck is the point in adding them in? The story is exciting enough already with plenty of amazing characters. Bringing back characters from the trilogy just because it would be cool to see them again is f*cking retarded.

technically Gimli and Legolas ain't in The hobbit, but probably they must have been alive already. A cameo would be cool, but that's all. I hope they do not change the story so badly like they changed the ending of the ROTK. I know if they don't change it, then it's gonna be much longer, but that was a horrible mistake in my opinion...

I could never figure out why the LOTR stars needed to be in the Hobbit or part 2. None of them were in the book except Gandolf and the main Hobbit.
I sure Del and Jackson will do an awesome job, but I would call the second film something else.
LOTR in small letters, and have a main title in large letters.

ive got no worries that Del toro and Jackson are gonna make an awesome movie, Davies as Gimli was fun and he kicked ass for being a dwarf, but if he cant reprise his role, specially since his character isnt in the original hobbit book, he doesnt need to be in it as a cameo appearance

same kind of goes for Legolas n any other characters from LOTR that were never mentioned in The Hobbit,if they decide to do it, thats koo,but dont worry people this movie will still hold its own without everyone screaming over an Orlando Bloom cameo

  8. The Narrator: The Better Man

Here here guys. Legolas definitely needs a cameo if not to be fighting side by side with his dad on the mountain in the battle of the five armies. Can't wait.

Oh and yeah I would have loved to see hi again but his character doesn't have a real part in the story so yeah..seeing him as a human would be cool.

Oh, btw, HUGH JACKMAN FOR BARD!!

Why would John Rhys Davies play Gimli in The Hobbit? That character isn't even in the book. The character of his father Gloin is. Why is this news? Some people are just idiots.

    Now this is depressing news.

I guess I have to reread the book. It's the only one that didn't bore me.

Not a real loss as his character plays no specific role in The Hobbit. It would be nice to see John grace the screen, but unless doused in makeup, I think it would just be confusing to the general-audience.

I completely agree, K-Man; a Legolas cameo is definitely in order. Even if just for a few moments, or without actual dialogue, I think fans would be satisfied. And as the movie is bridged into two, it seems ideal to toss a few scenes his way.

I trust Del Toro, and of course, Jackson and crew. Go 2011!

Damn, I would really have liked to see him make an appearance in the film. Its a perfect opportunity too considering his father and his cousin are both main characters so it would have been a great link to have Gimli in a scene or two.

@Todd89 - Yeah there are elves and quite a few at that. If you recall, when the Dwarves are passing through Mirkwood they are imprisoned by Thanduil, which is Legolas's father. Which, by the way, is also another perfect opportunity to give Legolas a few scenes as well.

I really think John-Rhys Davies should reconsider. I know he is extremely allergic to the prosthetics but there has got to be a way around that. I guess only time will tell.

I don't recall elves being in the Hobbit, how would that help. As for John since he is allergic to prostetics, why can't he play a human for once since the band does go to a human trading village,
which is near the dragon and the gold.

This kinda sucks. I am a HUGE fan of John, and loved his work as Gimli. But I understand since he was extremly allergic to the prostetics. I think he could do CGI role of one of the Trolls, like was and will be done for Gullum. Or he could do a role as a Hobbit this time, but the Hobbits was very limitited in The Hobbit which is ironic. One Bilbo was the main stay...
