John Malkovich was supposed to be the Vulture

But because I like Sam and I like Tobey Maguire and all that stuff, and the producers, two of whom I'd met before because I'd been offered [Green Goblin on] the first Spider-Man...I came to like them, so sure why not? But it didn't play out."
As we all know, Spider-Man is undergoing a complete cast and crew change at this time.
The Amazing Spider-Man was released July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, Campbell Scott. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

I look forward to it too, but will decide how I feel about it when I see it. Lizard for villain - +1. Stone for Gwen and NOT MJ - -1. Pretty much on neutral at this point.

I agree with @ejk. That was the studio's motive from the start, to "reboot" as in "start all the way over from the beginning" which includes Parker as a high school student. The minute they came out and said that, instead of simply continuing the series from where Raimi left off, I was convinced they didn't care what happened with this movie or any reactions it gets from the fans. Cheap studio tricks are never my cup of joe.
@CBF: My expectations are pretty low, too. I'm going to wait for the trailer... and depending on whether or not I like what I see (story, cast, acting, look, feel, etc.), I may go see it, just not right away. If I'm still not at all interested after all the trailers come out, I won't be paying to see it in theatres.
@Narrator: My sentiments are still shared with ejk1. The whole "reboot" excuse was crap, far too soon, complete cast change inexcusable, and considering all of those factors, I hardly doubt they're going to try their best. As @gandoff said, this film seems to be aimed at a "different generation and audience" as the last films, so as I said, I'll give it a shot if I like what I see in the final product. But other than that, I'm not a fan for "seeing something new" just yet. Maybe 10 years from now, sure.

@Narrator, the whole appeal of this trilogy was to see teenaged Peter Parker as Spider-Man. By putting him into college after just one movie would be ridiculous. They may as well have kept the original cast together.

@Narrator Good points, good points. Doesn't mean I will like their versions though. In all honesty, I would love to see a PG-13 animated film of the web-slinger. However, I know that's not going to happen with MARVEL Animated Features, either. I'm keeping an eye open at the new film, but yeah, my expectations are way low.

@Lane, I too liked the original two films (3 was okay, but when Venom entered it leaned more towards horrible). In fact the second Spidey is one of my favorite films. But I think that this reboot is really gonna try it's best. I agree that it's to soon for a reboot, but now that its moving ahead, I think it'll do us fans some good to watch a different live action take. And no, I really doubt they're featuring the Lizard as a slap in the face of sorts.
@CBF, I know you are an "Amazing" fan, but there is never gonna be a strict canon adaption of the source material. At least not for a while. That doesn't mean the film has to be bad. It may be disappointing, given your expectations, but I honestly believe the film will be pretty good. Look at what we got so far; teenage Parker, Gwen Stacy in the first film, Lizard. It's a step up to 02's Spider-Man.
@ejk, yes Garfield is too old. But I do not think they are gonna keep him in high school pass this film. In fact, I'm betting they will (hopefully) show his progression through college and who knows? Teaching? This is all by trilogies end of course. Because think about it, sequels usually take two years or so to make. If they delay that just a bit, then they can have the story arcs set in real time, with the time in-between sequels being spoken about in the films, like "Remember that time...", or "Those were some outlandish villains. How long ago was that?", etc. Far fetched? Maybe. I mean... it could definitely work.

I for one look forward to the film. You do not have to watch it obviously, but I'd consider it if I were you. Other than the age factor Garfield is a pretty believable Spider-Man, an even better Parker, and has the acting chops for it. Stone should make for an awesome Gwen (although MJ was preferred), and we have Ifans as Conner! Great. Webb is a talented director, proven with his feature film (500) Days of Summer, and his numerous music videos which I usually found entertaining and at times awesome (see his "Rough Landing Holly"). Overall, we could have gotten far worse folks.

Did you guys ever see the plot outline I drew for a SpiderMan 4 with Lizard and Kraven? I had it continuing from the end of 3 with Connors using the symbiote to try to grow his arm back and unintentionally mutating himself into the Lizard. Kraven was introduced as an arrogantly humorous big monster hunter (think Gaston in Beauty and the Beast) who vows to bring down the Lizard who has been terrorizing the city. So when Peter discovers that Connors actually is the Lizard, he spends the rest of the movie trying to cure Connors while also trying to keep Kraven from killing him. I would have loved for them to go that route, but sadly it won't happen.
If anyone is interested that outline is in the forums somewhere. I can try to find it.

I've said it once, I'll said it agian. Vultue could have set up the best chance of seeing Lizard. Vulture being a scientist, could have been written in to have a fued with Conners on some special contest. The fued leads to Conners using his machine to grow limbs with the lizard DNA as proof for his machine, but vulture messes with it. This could have been a 2 villian movie easy and worked out, or simply a one villian movie, setting up Lizard for the best stage for a 5th movie. For me, this reboot is nothing more then to clamier to the Twilight tweens who think that gothic stuff is cool, even though it went ou about 6 years ago. Now they want to UpDate Superman to the same Twilightish drool. Rami's take on the first two was great. As a comic book fan of all kinds, he stuck as close to the comics as he could being where he isw to tell about three years or more comic story lines in a 2 hour film. Only issue I had at all was the including of Venom in 3, in the manner they did. Venom is majority of terms, is Spidermans equal as a villian. He is so, not only couse the suit gives Brock majority of Parkers Spiderman powers, but he knows the one thing the other villians don't, until the ending set up to 2. He knows Parker is Spiderman.

If Lerman or another teen was tapped to play Peter Parker, then I would be totally down with it. But the casting of Garfield, along with the use of Lizard in the first film, tells me that this is going to be a trilogy. Which means that they are going to cut corners. I don't care for that.
