It seems the short list of actors to play The First Avenger: Captain America could be down to one. Fox 411 is reporting that The Office star John Krasinski is now the likely candidate to play Steve Rogers in the film.

Insiders at the Marvel compound tell Fox 411 that he is close to landing the superhero gig of his life. John, who plays Jim on The Office, has appeared in front of producers repeatedly since the start of the new year and since rumors began in February.

"John has read 4 times and is doing screen tests," our source tells us. "He has screen tested 2 times so far. It's very likely that he will be the new Captain America. He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week."

It was also said that Krasinski is, "the main focus" at Marvel for the role and they want to secure the lead role before focusing on the other roles in the film. Joe Johnston is directing the film from a script by Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely. A July 22, 2011 release date has been set for the film.

Captain America: The First Avenger was released July 22nd, 2011 and stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Richard Armitage, Stanley Tucci. The film is directed by Joe Johnston.

John Krasinski is not "small". Robert Downey Jr. is a short dude, and naturally thin. But when he's Sherlock Holmes or Tony Stark he is solid muscle. Krasinski is seven inches taller than Downey and if he gets this role he's going to pack on muscle just like Downey, Bale, and Jackman did. Hell, no one complained about Hemsworth getting cast as Thor, and he's the same size as Krasinski and that character is supposed to be a god.

@Dr. C: Honestly, I had no doubts about Ed Norton and RDJ being who they were.
Think about it? Who better to play Stark than a guy who's practically lived through his life? The drinking/drug issues, the look was always there.
And Anything ed norton touches is golden, so I knew that would be a hit.

John has to hit the gym asap but he is a good actor and is great in the Office. All he has to do is dye his hair blonde and we may have a damn good Captain America. Also people were skeptical about Robert Downey Jr, Ed Norton, and Heath Ledger were announced to play their comic book counterparts and they were all great.

Agree totally with Anlow1060.....When they say that Heath Ledger will do joker...I doubt the movie to be a hit..... But it turned out how really wrong I was........

John Krasinski would need his legs chopped off to play the only part if he would even be qualified for and that is Cap's sidekick Bucky!

Mark Valley who plays Christopher Chance on FOX's Human Target would be great pick as Steve Rodgers/Capt. America! maybe a tad old for the part but his overall persona on Human Target makes me think he would be a good choice. or maybe Josh Duhamel (mispell) another option?

Neil Fifer was still the best choice (his 'specs' are on the CA Message Board on IMDB. @Jokers - you knew they were looking for a 'lesser known' actor didn't you? So why the chatter on John's fan base... Marvel clearly (going with a lesser known) doesn't care about anyone's 'fan base.' http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1292175/

@Anjow: Krasinski doesn't have that big of a fan base though, only those who watch The Office (and let's face it, there's not that many fans of it) and the people who watch the indy films he's been in.
It's not like Ledger, who had a pretty decent fan base mostly cause of Brokeback mountain and the like, what? two other good movies he was in?

you all don't "get it" do you? Casting has now become a publicity stunt in itself. If they cast Krasinski it's gonna hype the hell out of this movie because people will think of Ledger as Joker. Doesn't necessarily mean it will work ( I think he's got the talent to surprise some people -- not Ledger level, but enough to make us go "ok yeah, he's good as Cap.")

Either way, just his name around the film and the oddity of it all is getting the film lots of attention and hype.

I think the whole, 6 people they had list, wasn't even up to par with who really could play. It's like they had a monkey, and every actor within the age range they're looking for, then had him throw 3 darts to pick them off.

  21. TheMime

Very much an unlikely candidate, but as ParkWilliams said "Strange things have happened"..and he just might, might, pull it off......but for me to try and envision him playing the role....crickets, just crickets.... The weird has yet to offer its candidacy.

@Vanboy : I understand where you're coming from, but remember, these writers and directors don't check out these sites at all, we have to work with whatever info is given to use to make conversation, and we can't change that. Even if we don't like JK in the role of the Cap, we have to try and spin this in a positive way, because there's a slim chance he'll be changed.

Yes Insert. Big nose and goofy long face. I won't take his Captain A seriously threatening at all. I don't care how good he can pull it off.

Put it this way, Steve Carrell was great in that dramatic role in Little Miss Sunshine. He was not very comedic in that. Pretty serious. His character attempted suicide. Can you see HIM playing a tough comic book hero? I didn't think so. That's how I feel about Krasinski in this role.

I mean, come on man, there are so many other actors waaaaaay better suited for this! I think that's enough with the unorthodox actor, playing against type. Sometimes, just sometimes, a duck will always be a duck.

I agree with Insert on this one,
In the Office (in this case I've been following it for a while)
He's not the "goofy" character, he simply acts like a normal person would in his situation of work.
I can see him pulling off the Cap, it'll be Risky, but give it a shot.

Besides, his role on the Office isn't that goofy. I don't know why people are making that accusation. Granted, I only recently started watching it(the re-runs on TBS), but I think I've seen plenty enough to deduce that he's not the Zach Braff of the show haha In fact, he's probably one of the more serious characters.
