The Thing will in fact be a prequel
"Anyone who is a big fan of the John Carpenter version of The Thing knows that it starts on the American base station but the investigation of where the Thing has come from leads us to know something very bad has happened at the Norwegian base station and the prequel centres itself around there and what happened pre-Kurt Russell".
In the film, due to film in Vancouver, Edgerton plays Sam Carter a helicopter pilot who teams with a graduate student named Kate Lloyd (Winstead) to pursue an alien life form.
The film is set to star Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton and is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
The Thing was released October 14th, 2011 and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Paul Braunstein, Trond Espen Seim, Kim Bubbs. The film is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr..

Mekhi Phifer would be the perfect Childs and Edward Norton would be the perfect Macready. It could take of right were the original ended. I think the alien was still alive at the end of the movie. It could split into millions of parts. So even if they blew it up at the end, there could still be a small part somewhere lurking around.

I Am A HUGE fan of John Carpenters The Thing. I even wrote a paper on it when I was in school (got an "A"). I rather see a prequel because I dont want to see someone destroy the ending of The Thing. That is one of the best endings of a movie ever. You have to decide for yourself what it is what but you never really know. No Hollywood happy ending. No bullsh*t romance!!
We know that it did not end well for the Swedes-I mean the Norwegians. I agree w/ Vanboy-please no crap w/ romance!!
I hope they reproduce the same look from the Thing and keep the facts of what the crew from the US station find out after the Norwegians mess up and awaken the Thing!! I am looking forward to this but at the same ime I can see them mess this up-Just like Aliens Vs Predator!! We will see.

I thought that the Norwegian team were all dudes. Well there goes the rough and tough guy action movie of the original. Female sensitivities are at risk. The story will have to tread carefully, as not to show Winstead too butch and not too "Oh my, I broke a nail". It's going to take extreme suspension of disbelief to accept that somebody as hot as Winstead would be in an arctic Hell with a bunch of dudes, unless there's an unnecessary/obligatory love subplot to muck up the storyline. Do we have to create a character for a female, in every movie? "Predator"-Anna. It's always good to see a hot female in a movie, yes, but not The Thing. I mean, the original was so good because it wasn't clogged up with any kind of love triangle crap, and you know their going to try to shove something in this. At least Maggie Gyllenhaal would have been more believable. Please, no damsel in distress crap!
Now, is it going to be called "The Thing"? If it is, the prequel aspect of it, doesn't gel with the fact that the original has that name already. It should be called "The Thing: The Horror Begins", "Discovery of the Thing", or "Origin of The Thing", "The Thing: Can of Worms Opened" ; ).
Well, we'll see. The effects better look the same too. And they better make the prequel match what Kurt Russell finds at the other facility. Burnt mutated alien body and all. Make it lead into the original, kind of like how "Revenge of the Sith" ended, leading into "A New Hope".

The Thing is a classic, what is the point of doing the thing prequel before John Carpenters the thing. The Norwegien camp they all have to die at the end of it so it could lead in to John Carpenters the thing. sounds abit daft to me. why not continue the story were it left off in John Carpenter. The Thing.
