Joe Johnston Directing First Avenger: Captain America!

Joe Johnston has inked a deal to direct The First Avenger: Captain America, Marvel Studios' take on its classic comic book character. Marvel's Kevin Feige is producing.

No writers are on board, but the studio, which is hearing pitches, expects to hire shortly.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnston first met with Marvel two years ago. When the two parties clicked, general talks turned into Captain America-specific meetings, with much of the project's current direction resulting from those early conversations.

"This is a guy who designed the vehicles for 'Star Wars,' who storyboarded the convoy action sequence for 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' " Feige said. "From 'Rocketeer' to 'October Sky' to 'The Wolfman,' you can look at pieces of his movies and see how they lead to this one."

Created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon for Timely Comics, Captain America is the heroic alter ego of Steve Rogers, who is rejected by the Army for being too sickly and undergoes an experiment that takes him to the pinnacle of human form. Paired with an indestructible shield, he became a symbol of the war effort, in and out of comics.

The character disappeared in the 1950s but was revived during the early era of Marvel Comics. He was reintroduced as part of the Avengers, the absence explained by having him being in a state of suspended animation during a war mission until found by the superteam.

Kicking off with Iron Man, Marvel Studios' slate of movies --including Thor and Iron Man 2 sequel -- is building toward an Avengers movie set for release in 2011, in which the characters from the films team for one big adventure. "Captain America" is scheduled for release May 6, 2011.

Captain America will be a World War II-set movie, and the character will appear in the modern day-set Avengers. Executive producing on Captain America are Louis D'Esposito, Stan Lee and Marvel Studios' chairman David Maisel.

The character's last live-action appearance was in 1990's Captain America, a cheap production from 21st Century Films that ended up going to straight to video. The movie starred Matt Salinger as the hero, dethawed in modern times to fight his archnemesis, the Red Skull.

Captain America: The First Avenger was released July 22nd, 2011 and stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Richard Armitage, Stanley Tucci. The film is directed by Joe Johnston.

I think Keanu Reeves should play as Captain America, he do have the face for it with the mask on. Joe Johnston, trust me on this.
Keanu Reeves is perfect for it.

I like John Cena and Channing Tatum... Cena has the build and the age... Tatum would have to bulk up some... but as for acting, come on how much acting is involved with Cap...

I just watched Reign of Fire the other night again, and I forgot how badass MM was in that. It got me thinking that maybe he could pull off Cap. However, I'd still take another actor over him just for the fact I don't think he's be able to pull off nicely trimmed, blonde, haircut, AND his voice. He'd have to be one hell of an actor to make that accent change for Cap

My choice is still Brad Pitt or an unknown

But Matthew Mcconaughey has such a bitch of a voice! its so irritating! Matthew Fox would be good as Captain America. and if you look at him he does resemble him quite a lot, all you need to do is dye his hair blond, not very hard to do, and he is pretty buff, but not overly buff. but he has great facial features for Cap. off that subject and just cuz i saw the thing for spider-man i hated Tobby Maguire as Peter Parker!!!! hes such a horrible actor! and he doesn't even look like Peter!

And as for Brad Pitt. I think he better as Thor than Captain America. He is a little older which would be fitting for The Thunder God. And plus is Brad Pitt tradition that he plays a badass everytime he has that long hair...hence Troy and Legends of the Fall

  6. THE JOKER

i think matthew Mcconaughey would be ok too. Look at his more serious films and it shows he can be a very serious actor, not always comic or romantic and he definitely has the look as well

Matthew Fox doesn't resemble Steve Rogers. He needs to be a buff, blonde, guy. That's why Brad Pitt could work. But who knows? They might choose to go with an unknown, cuz the Avengers movie is gettin pretty goddamn expensive lmao

I'd rather want Fox playing Hal Jordan than Captain America

Ok, Ok. just a suggestion to all. What about Matthew Fox? Hes on the show LOST he plays "Jack the doctor guy",Vantage Point as "Kent Taylor", and he came out in speed racer as "Racer X". In my opinion he would make an amazing Captain America. Hes a great actor and he has all the traits down! In LOST hes the leader of everyone on the island everyone follows him and goes to him for guidance. Thats what Captain America was right a great leader of the avengers! and in Speed Racer he has an awesome fight seen where you can see that he does have muscles and hes a bad ass! lol the Racer X out fit almost looked like the Captain America suit just replace the X with an A! as for tyler13d's idea i think it would be more exciting if they just find him and it cuts off when they dig him out but leave the defrosting until the avengers movie.

Craig is too old. He'd def. be able to handle the physicality of it, but I can't picture it. Besides, he turned down Thor because it would be too much with Bond AND Thor, so there's no way he'd take on Cap

Leo is not a type of guy who will do a superhero movie,so he's out.And Brad is not doing another movie that is a bit alike as "Troy".Maybe
    Patrick Wilson,Viggo Mortensen,Josh Lucas,
Clive Owen,Sean Bean,Mark Walberg, ect.Any of those actors could do Captain America or Thor.

Yeah, I was against leo for cap, but then I saw body of lies and knew what a bad ass he could be lol SO, I wouldn't mind it...him or Brad Pitt. If Leo gets Cap, then maybe Pitt could play Thor if he grew his hair out and beefed up a lil

Yeah, cuz the guy who tells the guy who's playing the guy what to do doesn't matter...

The defrosting iedea is great... maybe as a cookie at the end credits. Scene:

Fury and Stark working calmly on some computers...

Stark: Where'd you find this guy?
Fury: Need to know Stark... need to know.
Stark: Well considering I'm reviving this guy, don't you think I need to know? Press the green button for me, please. (pointing at a console)
Fury: This one? (pointing at a green button)
    Stark: That be the one.
Fury: Considering our team is almost complete, I guess you DO need to know.
Stark: (walks up to Fury) It would be nice. (He reaches around Fury and pulls down a lever)
Stark: And our team will be complete in 12 hours.
(They both look toward the same direction. Camera pans from their faces to the direction they're looking and we see a frozen block of ice with the figure of a man inside. A figure in the shape of CAPTAIN AMERICA.

    Continue credits.

The way I see it Cap's movie might as well be set in WWII, End with an epic battle which will see the "death" of the character, nearing the end titles you'd see the modern day setting with Stark and Fury Supervising his 'defrosting' ...nothing too long; just a glimspe of it.. pretty much like that awesome last pannel in the Ultimates story line where the body's being "thawed" by S.H.I.E.L.D scientsts'. Just suggesting.

Everytime I see that title, I cringe a little. Might I inquire as to WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THE SIMPLE TITLE 'CAPTAIN AMERICA'?! Seriously, is 'The First Avenger' really goddamn necessary?! This movie better rock my socks and make me eat the magic if it wants me to let that sh*t slide...
