J.J. Abrams to Collaborate with Steven Spielberg on His Next Film?

J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg collaborating on a secret film?
It's no secret that J.J. Abrams has a lot on his plate, with Lost wrapping up along with producing Fringe, the new NBC pilot Undercovers and the upcoming Mission: Impossible IV, not to mention the looming Star Trek 2 sequel. It seems that Abrams has added another project to the pile and, according to Vulture, he will be collaborating on a new secretive film project with Steven Spielberg.

The site reports that Abrams had just finished the script for the unnamed project, which was said to be, "a tip of the hat to [Spielberg's] movies of the seventies and early eighties." It was also said that Abrams would direct the new film himself, with production to take place as early as this fall for Paramount.

While details on the story of the film weren't readily available, it was said that the film will deal with ordinary people put in extraordinary circumstances, similar to such early Spielberg films as Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. It was also said that Abrams is "insistent" that Spielberg be involved in the project, perhaps as an executive producer or advisor.

"J.J. wants to make sure Steven is properly paid homage to," said the site's source. "This is really an interpretation of some of Spielberg's earlier films, but done in a personal way."

After watching Cloverfield for half an hour I had to stop watching it, the camera motion was too much.

@Zany, funny... you named all my top directors. Lol.

    First choice: Peter Jackson
    Second: J.J. Abrams
Third: Fincher (and would be the most unexpected)
    Fourth: Snyder
To be honest I can't see Nolan doing this type of project, but who knows.

Either of those directors, creating an epic trilogy... WOW! Can you say Star Wars for a whole new, and darker generation.

Its gonna be Indiana Jones 5. At least I hope anyway. Abrams would be the best choice to take that series over. He could make "Mutt Williams" halfway interesting.

I agree. Dark Tower would be off-the-charts cool. Abrams, Jackson, Snyder, Fincher, or Nolan would be my line-up of potential directors with Fincher at the top of the list.

I would also like to see a sequel to Star Trek first, but I am certainly open for a Speilburg/Abrams collaboration, especially with the focal point being some kind of alien/creature.

@gothamknight, I think Dark Tower would be amazing if done by Abrams... or even Peter Jackson. Such a tale is an honor to tell. to see it done on screen... it brings tears to my eyes.

  22. The Narrator: The Better Man

Awesome. I don't watch Fringe so idk out that. Lost is wrapping up, and I wish he would direct the two part series finale seeing as how he directed the two part pilot.

I think this sounds really cool, especially with Steven on board. As for a Star Trek follow up, o course he's going to do that first. several of the actors contracts expire in a few years (not that that wouldn't return to such a franchise), and they are supposed to start shooting on 2011. So he'll do that first, then print this project, and then, the Cloverfield sequel. Sounds too be a good time. As for MI:4... he did good with the third one. But not a priority.
