Jim Broadbent has signed on to the movie musical, Hairspray for New Line Cinema.

The Oscar-winner will play Wilbur Turnblad, the father of the lead Tracy Turnblad, says Variety. Already part of the cast are John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Amanda Bynes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron and newcomer Nikki Blonsky, who'll play Tracy.

Adam Shankman is directing Hairspray, which is based on the hit Broadway musical and the 1988 film by John Waters about 1960's Baltimore. Shooting is set to begin September 5th in Toronto for a Dec. 21, 2007 release.

Hairspray was released July 20th, 2007 and stars John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, James Marsden, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron. The film is directed by Adam Shankman.
