After just two seasons, it seems that the new centerpiece of a long-running USA Network series is leaving the show. Variety reports that Jeff Goldblum has left the USA series Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

The trade reports that Goldblum's reps informed them that the actor had, "made up his mind" to leave the show and that the decision wasn't a negotiating tactic. While the decision was said to be "amicable," the actor's reps revealed that his decision to leave the show was, "due to the uncertainty" of the series' future.

Goldblum had been on the series for the past two seasons and took over as the lead centerpiece of the show after the top trio of Vincent D'Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe and Eric Bogosian left the show after the eighth season. The ninth season, which wrapped up on July 6, saw Goldblum take the lead in the series and also featured new casting additions Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Saffron Burrows.

USA still hasn't decided on whether or not to give Law & Order: Criminal Intent a 10th season yet, although it was said that the ratings significantly decreased over this past season.

We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further details on the fate of Law & Order: Criminal Intent as soon as we have more information.

@Drifter49: That's one of the tragedies of television. They sometimes snag great actors for their leads, but they never get any exposure in films. William Petersen of "CSI" was in "Manhunter" & "Fear" in the '80s & '90s, and has since returned to films. But his acting was good in both, and worthy of something more than the occasional appearance as a labtech on a show that's dragged on far too long. As for Jeff, after "The Lost World" his big movie credits disappeared, and he was around in the '80s too, so I don't see why he hasn't been snagging better roles than "Igby Goes Down" 8yrs years ago. Unless he chooses to stageact instead.

@Slysnide:I have to agree with you there.Doing a television series there is no real hope that it will continue.Plus you're always playing the same damn character over and over again, the repetition alone can get tedious.Even though movies are hit or miss,at least no one plays the same character twice(unless you're Mel Gibson as Martin Riggs.)

@Justhim_sir:That would be interesting to see.A show about ATF.Why not?

end the show, and do something like new york undercover series type deal, or at least ATF series since I haven't seen those type of cops before.
