Javier Bardem offered the role of Roland Deschain in The Dark Tower
The news comes just after reports that Christian Bale was the front runner for the lead in Ron Howard's sprawling adaptation of Stephen King's novel series, which will span three movies and a TV series. While it isn't clear if Javier Bardem will accept the role or not, it is believed that director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer have found their nomadic gunslinger in Javier Bardem.
Akiva Goldsman will write the first installment of The Dark Tower and he will also script the TV version of The Dark Tower as well. The story follows Roland Deschain, the last of a mysterious order of gunmen, who becomes humanity's last hope for survival as he goes on a quest to find The Dark Tower.
This is not the first time that Javier Bardem's name has been mentioned in connection to The Dark Tower. We reported at the end of December that he was one of the leading candidates for Roland Deschain, along with Viggo Mortensen.
No production schedule has been released, although a May 27, 2013 release date has been set for The Dark Tower. The TV series, which will either be a mini-series or a limited-run series, will air between the first and second movie.
The Dark Tower is in development . The film is directed by Ron Howard.

Clint Eastwood is still the man for the job.

I prefer Viggo over Bardem, and Bardem over Bale. Bardem and Viggo have the right weathered, beat up look to them, but Bardem's accent is very thick and not what I imagined Roland sounding like.
Still, no complaints here from me.

@ed_wood... I agree Viggo would be best fit....
But I dont see any film star giving in to a deal where they have to do three back to back films, and atleast 3 seasons of a TV show in between them, and not allowed to do anything eles.... Only person I know with that much desire to pull off a role, is Bale. Couse he would toss all of himself for it. Thinking it all is one long film. A guy who starves for a movie to get into a physical look as he did, could do it.

This is one of the rare occasions where I can see ALL the candidates being considered for the role as being good casting choices. I like the idea of Javier Bardem or Christian Bale as the gunslinger, but I think either Daniel Craig or Viggo Mortensen should get the role.

whoever it is has to be very interesting to watch as the first book is not only slighly boring but also slightly talkless. I have doubts about this. The second and third novels however are excellent and would translate better to film IMO. Plus Ron Howard has been hit or miss lately. Crossing my fingers.

The book is about a man ho can't find a tower, because the tower is dark.

Are they adapting the first book? Cause after reading, I'm guessing they'll adapt the other 6-7 books for TV as in the article
