Jason Takes on the Snow in Friday the 13th Part II

We were recently on the Chicago set of Platinum Dunes' upcoming A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, and we got a chance to talk with producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form about their entire slate of upcoming projects. While we can't talk about Freddy Krueger, his new look, his make-up, or the rebooted plot at all, we can let you in on a few tidbits the duo were willing to share with us about their other films. The biggest news to come out of the chat session was the fact that Friday the 13th II will take place in the snow. Here is what they had to say:

Jason is going to have a snowball fight. Look, for Friday the 13th II, which is a totally different film than A Nightmare on Elm Street, it needs to look different. It has a totally different feeling. We want to have fun. We want to present something that audiences haven't seen before. One of the things they haven't seen before is Jason in the snow. They haven't seen that before. Our goal is to bring them things they haven't seen.

Will Friday the 13th II be in 3D?

It certainly has been talked about. The financial ramifications of doing a film of that budget in 3D are huge. Its not like they are going to say, "We want you to make a sequel. Here is twice as much money." It doesn't go that way. All of our movies are about the exact same budget. I guarantee if we make that movie, it will be the same budget as the original. They may ask, "Do you want to do it in 3D?" And we will talk about it. If its six or seven million dollars more, they will probably opt out. Unless something unexpected happens, it will not be in 3D. Though we would love to make a 3D horror movie. We would love to do it. I just don't think they will throw the money our way. And I don't think we have the time to be ready for it.

What about a release date?

Here is the other problem. We don't have a release date. We don't have a greenlit movie. I want to be very clear on that. We don't have a script for Friday the 13th II, it is not greenlit. If it does get greenlit, and we are able to mount it in a reasonable amount of time, we will have the film opening on August 13th of 2010. I can tell you this. The movie will not entirely take place in the snow. I don't want to go to Winnipeg and shoot this whole movie in the snow. We did that once, and we are never going to do it again. If we make this movie, we need to do it quickly. We need to shoot it before the winter does come. The date is going to be summer. So we'd have to figure out how much time we need for the 3D. How much post time we would need. It is a lot longer than a non-3D movie to get it into theaters. From day one, when we started talking about the movie, we always envisioned it in 3D.

Is the cast returning?

We talk to our cast all the time. They are great friends of ours. And we talk to Derek Mears.

Is The Birds remake still happening?

We keep trying. I don't know. That is so hard to get the script right. We struggle with it. I won't have anything to say until the script is finished. We have already said enough. There are limitations with the birds. They peck. And poop. There is not a lot of variety. We start with the shitting and go from there. It is a much harder movie to do. As you guys know, we lay ourselves out there to get annihilated online every single day. And that movie opens us up to complete annihilation. Why pursue it? Because as a producer, you pursue a bunch of different things. The ones that come to fruition, you make. The other ones are just a good effort. It comes to a point where we decide what we are going to make. We are going to do this (A Nightmare on Elm Street), and then we will follow it up with Friday the 13th II. It doesn't feel like The Birds is next up after that. The Butcherhouse is a really good script. We are really close on that one. And it is an original script. It was a play, but it is original. That is in the same wheelhouse as Friday the 13th. It is fun horror, it has kids running around, there's not too much torture. We aren't pulling people's teeth and nails out. There is a great villian. That one feels pretty good. We don't come up with these movies and then send people to the set to make them for us. We need to figure out how much time we can spend on a set, and this year, we are spoken for. Fortunately. Hopefully The Butcherhouse will be made next year.

A Nightmare on Elm Street opens April 16th, 2010.

A Nightmare on Elm Street was released April 30th, 2010 and stars Jackie Earle Haley, Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, Kellan Lutz, Clancy Brown, Connie Britton. The film is directed by Samuel Bayer.

Jesus, I can't belive a sequel is in the works. While not surprising, after greenlighting the first piece of sh*t, which all studio board members should be fired over, they're going ahead with Part II. Doesn't matter how much money it made, or the sequel could make. If it's still a sh*tty project, then they shouldn't waste their time on it as they'll lose all respect for themselves no matter what the final B.O.R. is.

The Birds? What do they mean "remaking" The Birds? It was a classic with flaws yes, and isn't a story that can much be improved upon by these f*ck ups who'll destroy this film's rep. Though all the Friday sequels were pretty bad, so I guess the new ones aren't too terrible in comparison as they must fit right in to wrangle the same audience. So yeah, they should take the advice of the online annihilators like myself and deny ever having considered this "remake" project. Didn't anyone learn from '97s Psycho?

As for going to the snow, THAT would be the best location ever concieved for the Friday series. I can't believe over the 11 films that they've never gone there. And why f*ck it up by saying they'd not film the whole thing there? It'd be perfect and add some class to the series as it'd incorporate a scarier location for the series, as these summer woods aren't helping it.

And which film did they make entirely in the snowy landscape of Winnipeg?

it's clear neither JASON or FREDDY will ever die, but i hope they keep dying at the box office!

i couldn't stand either of the franchise and it's just money wasted on these projects instead of putting it to more creative ones.

Why would you want him in the snow? Camp Crystal Lake is a Summer camp. Are they gonna do ice skating in the winter? Instead of having his machete to kill the kids, he'll use f*cking iceskates.

    No remake of The Birds.

Hows this for an idea: In the first half an hour three people get killed, but we don't see the killer we assume it's Jason.
Adults are in it instead of teenagers, they are all in their thirties and have cancer.
Two of them die in the night, it's snowing out side and the rest accept the killings. There is a cover up and a new killer is on the prowl, Jason enters the house. We see his mask in the dark, he's just watching as the killer kills two more cancer patients.
He's up set by the killings since he had nothing to do with them but the locals think it's him.
An excellent story line is in place and the plot is so thick it's better than any of the old films. Jason waits to find out who the killer is until the end of the film, it turns out it's his aunt that runs the place and then he kills her.
Jason turns and kills the last five that are sleeping.

Anyhow a running Jason isn't Jason, he's dead and stiff that's why he never runs in the past films plus it helps to make suspense.

they shouldn't have remade this. if they were going to then do something with it that we haven't seen but there not much you can do with this. the first one was pretty much...stupid teenagers go to the woods get drunk, smoke pot, have sex and get killed then the credits run. again stupid teenagers go to the woods get drunk, smoke pot, have sex and get killed. do something with it we haven't seen or don't do it at all.

Sounds cool. The remake was pretty good. But 3D, I dont know about that. We'll see how it turns out.
And never remake a Hitchc*ck movie. That'll f*cking suck if they remake the Birds. Bad Bad Bad Idea.

they need to just call this Friday the 13th Part 13, because the previous one wasn't a remake. It's just a sequel and they just threw that remake onto it to get more money. It's no reboot either.

I must admit I did like in H20 when the kid had the hockey skate in his head...in the opening kills...so I could see Jason using hockey skates to kill some poor soul...or just straight smacking a head against the ice...i mean we seen him push a face through a wall of the mobile home in part 6....we could see him through a couple into the fireplace as they are making love next to it....have we seen jason set someone on fire? Flare in the mouth part 5...flaming crossbow arrow in the eye part 3...have we seen anything else with fire? outside of him being set on fire in part 7?

First of Hitchc*ck's films should never be remade, I cringed every time I saw the new remake of Phyco. I think that's spelled wrong.

Second thing: 3D isn't a great idea, there are some people that hate it. But in the years to come more and more films will be made with 3D.
Games, films and TV shows will be in 3D one day and I cringe at the thought because quite a lot of people will protest.

Three words for ya...My Bloody Valentine. 3D Horror movies aren't cutting it. I get it for kids movies, they eat that sh*t up, but for horror, noone really cares too much. I don't think. Some people may dig it, but i'm down for the sequel. No matter how many they do, Jason is still bad ass. Still would like to see Jason Vs Mike Myers though. As for the snow, kind of a cheap sell, but its different. People wanna see some new, but keeping the same elements of classic horror

3D may be good, and it may be bad. Good because it feels like your more in the movie(RealD), but bad because 3D can sometimes be annoying.
Also, on the Birds, it's not that hard to take a previous and change it around a bit, they did that with Psycho(actually they did psycho shot for shot, and it wasn't that good of a movie). They just shouldn't remake The Birds, if it is that complicated to update it, than don't do it.
