Jamie Foxx Is Django Unchained

Jamie Foxx is Django Unchained
Jamie Foxx is Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino has made his decision. Jamie Foxx will play the lead in the director's next project Django Unchained. While no deal has been made yet, an official agreement should be set soon.

Jamie Foxx will play a bounty hunting ex-slave named Django who is taught the tricks of the trade by his former master-turned-mentor, a German dentist played by Inglourious Basterds's Christoph Waltz. Django sets out to save his wife Broomhilda, an abused slave, from Mississippi plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), who operates Candyland, a club that exploits female slaves as sex objects and pits male slaves in fights to the death.

Will Smith was the early favorite for the role of Django in this Spaghetti Western, but he eventually passed on the project. Django Unchained will head into production later this year.

Django Unchained comes to theaters December 25th, 2012 and stars Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Gerald McRaney, Dennis Christopher, Kurt Russell, Laura Cayouette. The film is directed by Quentin Tarantino.

@supermanempire - Not that i don't respect your decision to not like certain actors, but if you like 7 Pounds and The Pursuit of Happiness. Then i think you will like Six Degrees of Separation, Ali, and I Am Legend. It's some of Will better movies where he shows off more then he's pecks in your words i guess you can say, and P.S you just reminded me of how funny that steaming Willy Beaman song was lol.

@k-man Kudos on the reply, funny sh*t...just a note, if you read the second part of my comment you would get that I have very little respect for In Living Color alum Mr. Fox aka steamin Willy Beaman. I get that you are a Will Smith fan, but other then 7 Pounds and The Pursuit of Happiness he really hasn't flexed anything but his pecks. He's not terrible, just not the infallible super actor that you described.

This was a shock to me too, but I like it. As I have always wanted to see Jamie kick some a** in a movie, still think he would make a good Luke Cage but he passed on it.

@narrator Ha! Love the idea! Maybe a bit too exclusive for the users that aren't as popular... But if you used a panel of judges rather than popular vote you might get some good variety. That or if you made nominees and put that up to popular vote. Like three users and we all vote. Cool idea.

@narrator: I shall accept the humble title of wise-ass, even though most people replace "wise" with "jack" or drop the "wise" altogether. Also, my intelligence rarely proceeds me, so I welcome the change. :P

And on that little note, I am totally down for an awards ceremony; although I foresee it being less like the Oscars and more like the Dundies. Another tangent: @diaigma is a character for sure, but I believe he's most animated when using puns. :P

@thedude-abides, mmm. Well, for guys like me, @dan1, @corey, and @insertusernamehere, I'm not sure if we can cut down any one particular genre or such that we specialize in. However, if we could,as you led into, find an aspect of filmmaking we take notice of (whether it be score's to cinematography) I think that'd be swell as well.

@insertusernamehere, fantastic idea. I've been kicking around numerous ideas for over a week, and I should have one by tomorrow, to kick things off.

@corey, thanks for the support, man. We'll have to wait 'till some of the other regulars chime in their thoughts, and we may have something.

@narrator I appreciate that, friend. And you're right. Every one of us movieweb regulars has a particular area they seem to specialize in. It's obvious with everyone you mentioned, diaigma and moviegeek, cbf and ejk1, and then myself being big on the classics both new and old.

Although, we should come up with some superlatives that suit guys like yourself and @dan1 aside from just being well-rounded. I think when it comes to areas of expertise, everyone is simply an extension of where they focus the majority of their efforts. I think asking yourself what areas of film you consider yourself to be more well-versed on than most is a good indication.

  14. The Narrator: The Better Man

    @dan1, haha, that's exactly what I mean.

But really, I'd say well-rounded suits you. @diaigma is the animation buff, @moviegeek is the box office titan, @comicbookfan and @ejk1 are our resident comic wizards, with @thedude-abides being our main "the classics" man, and @zanyzap being a resident wise-ass. Then there's guys like you, @corey, and @insertusernamehere who are relatively well rounded. I don't know what I'd be considered, so I'll have to go with well-rounded as well. I'm sure there are other awards more suting to us individually, but they escape me at the moment. Lol. We should have an awards ceremony, where we vote on out greatest reviewer of the month or season, our resident (insert title here), etc. It'd be like the Oscars but focused on our community.

I wasn't sold on Smith in this role from the start and now that Foxx has it I'm not exactly sold on him either really. Guess we'll see how he does eventually but I was thinking Howard would have been a solid choice for this one but who knows Foxx could turn out to be perfect in this. I trust Tarantino to make another great film regardless of who the lead is anyway.

@supermanempire - First off, "You dick"......how did my comment, in any way, warrant being called a dick???

Second, if you are really that narrow minded, to say that the only thing Will Smith does is say "Ahhhh hell nahhhhhh ------------O-------------Ahhhhh hell Yeaahhhh" based off of a couple stupid lines that some writer gave him to say in, what, one film??

Then this is what I have to say......

"IF YOU MAKE ME, THEN I WILL BLAST YO AEROELASTIC ASS OUT OF THE SKY!!!!!!"

  20. The Narrator: The Better Man

@dan1, I'm well aware of your slight dissatisfaction in Smith's handling of his roles, and I know a few others who find him overrated. But rom-com's aside, he's talented. From Pursuit of Happiness, to Seven Pounds (mediocre film, good acting), to I Am Legend, he's been handling his more recent roles rather well, and I hope he continues to do so. He's an entertainer, and while I agree that in his comedic or romantic roles he's rather repetitive, that's not to say he's not deserving of a little lovin' from common folk out there, such as myself. Lol. And please, I'd give you the "all-around" award, and give the smart ass title to @zanyzap, mostly because he's called on it more. :P

  22. Dan

@narrator Ok, here's the part where I play my role and be a smart ass...@narrator doing what he does best, laying the verbal smackdown :P

I ain't bout to get into it with you, you're right, what he does off camera, whether it's pimping his kids, telling bad jokes, etc, shouldn't affect our judgment of him as an actor, but sans Pursuit of Happyness, the guy isn't that amazing to me, personally. He's got an impressive resume, no doubt, but I have a hard time getting past his goofy shtick he's built on over the years. That's just me, though.

Best dramatic examples I can think for Foxx are Collateral and Ray, which were pretty kick ass, but he also has that goofy side to him I sometimes can't see past.

    11 months agoby @dan1Flag

  23. The Narrator: The Better Man

I completely agree with @fat-jesus and @thedude-abides. Foxx is good, no doubt, but not necessarily a potent contender when thrown in with the likes of Elba and Smith. Nonetheless, the concept and supporting cast and unique characters that QT produces has always been the driving force for this film, and the fact that it's a western has me sold, whether the lead's Foxx, Elba, or Tarantino himself.

As for the whole "Will Smith is too family geared" argument, I cry bullsh*t. Sure, he's been in a few dramas and or comedies lately, which wouldn't strike us as a typical fit for a role like this, in a film like this. It's funny, because I thought the somewhat left-field casting was what would fuel cheer for the film. Tarantino casts renown actors in oddball rolls all the time (look at DeNiro in Jackie Brown). I definitely found the earlier casting news a pleasent surprise. Sure, Smith's blockbuster films were never hardcore, with the exception of Bad Boys 1 & 2, I Am Legend, and a few others. But he excels at handling hard to handle material, and while that's not necessarily the case with this film, it definitely showcases his versatility and abilities in each new project he takes. No self respecting movie buff can ever call him a one-act guy, and while some may find him "overrated", that doesn't mean he's an unsuited actor for a role like this, given that we've never tested him in it.

People talking low of him, for the most part, do so because of his children's recent escapades in the entertainment industry, and his ungoverned support of their projects. That's his business. He's a father, and he's supporting his kids the way he thinks is right. I'm not a father myself, and I wouldn't know what I'd do in that situation, but frankly, I don't give a damn. While I don't enjoy Jayden Smith borrowing his dads moves, or Willow trying to make something unnecessary of herself at such a young age, that doesn't in the least affect Smith's individual abilities as an actor, or a father. Not that it's any of the few sour grapes out there's business. He's letting his children do what they believe to be right; what they believe they have a future in. So be it. I'm not going to tell him how to raise his kids, nor should anyone else think so. I feel guilty just bringing them up in a thread like this, but I know biased views when I see them. This brings me to the point that I, and all of you, don't need to condone any of his actions. He's an actor - take him for what he does on screen, and everything else is just noise as far as we should be concerned. The excuses people find nowadays to rag on others vastly more talented is stomach churning. And before some know-it-all responds to me regarding the freedom of the internet, and the ability to judge someone based on what it is they do both in their public and private lives is one of the many gifts of grace from our nation, I do believe that there's a balance one can find in terms of when and when not to trouble yourselves over the actions of someone outside your circles. I do believe that some of your stand would change to "We're entitled to jack sh*t!" were the tables changed and the roles reversed.

Back to the film, I'm amptly pumped for the project. Great cast, solid director, and a scarcely visited genre. I'm most definitely game.
