"A number of names have privately been doing the rounds, including Daniel Radcliffe and Jack Black but James is the one the film's bosses really want," said the newspaper's source. He went on to add, "They're expected to have talks with him soon so hopefully it could be confirmed in the not too distant future."
Director Guillermo del Toro wouldn't comment on the news, but he did offer that, while recently meeting with Peter Jackson, "I can tell you it's down to a few names that we all agree upon. For our first choice, completely magically, we all said the same name."
We'll have more information as it unfolds. The Hobbit is still in early stages of pre-production and the film won't start production until sometime in 2009. The film is slated for release in December of 2011.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes to theaters December 14th, 2012 and stars Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

James McAvoy would be perfect for Bilbo! Even his accent would make a nice touch. Plus, I'm sure it helps being the sexiest man on the planet ;) lol

I'm very interested in seeing this movie happening, so we'll all just have to hope that Christopher Tolkein wises up and sees that this movie franchise is incredible and that it doesn't in any way put a damper on his fathers name.

Well I think that he is a good actor and looks like a Hobbit, specially in that picture. But the hobbit described by tolkien is more like peter jackson, that means fat, not very young. Pretty much Ian Holms portrail. That's what I think, we should see...

LEO: Lord Epsilon Omega
This could work. He does look the role.
But I noticed something: Daniel Radcliff and Jack Black? Um... No. Nonononono. Those two are great actors, but they're not The Hobbit material. But James McAvoy could do it! :-)
But I wonder if this movie's still being made, with that jerk Christopher Tolkien going senile and crap. I hope it is.

If only Ian Holm was 20 years younger.
They should dig out the 'Ash' mask from Alien and use that!

Dude I could totally see McAvoy as Bilbo, but he'd have to put on a little more weight. As for Radcliffe and Black, no. We don't need a kid who looks like he's just out of puberty and we don't need a clown. This is a serious movie and Black just can't get serious down. He tried in King Kong(kind of) and he did alright but I just don't see him fronting this kind of movie.

Hmm... Jack Black - I can actually see that happening - Bilbo's character is fun loving, slightly pudgy, and cheerful (unlike the emotionally tormented Frodo we've become so accustom to seeing over the years)... In my opinion Jack Black (while the black sheep in the group) could provide a convincing choice. Daniel Radcliffe is a "BIG NO" & Im just bias against McAvoy - his characters are one dimensional.

I'm sure I've seen him in something before, I just cannot remember what though. . . . Oh yea, you are right DarkTower19, he was Mr. Tumnus. Hmmm. . . I'm very interested to see this movie, even though I have yet to read any of these books.

Mr. Tumnus? Harry Potter? Nacho Libre? We need to start a pool for who can guess the actor correctly.
