James Franco Slams 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1' with Scathing Review

The Renaissance man takes this franchise to task, comparing the latest sequel to a child beauty pageant.

Is there anything James Franco can't, or won't, do? The actor-turned-renaissance man of many hats has taken to film critiscm, and his first review is a slam against The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and The Descendants.

The actor posted this scathing critique on The Paris Review, where he called Breaking Dawn a greedy franchise that is hypocritical of sex and marriage.

In comparing the two films, this is what James Franco had to say.

"Both use sex as a submerged theme while on the surface promoting a wholesome idea of family values; both seem to devalue motherhood; and both deal with characters who are so financially secure that they are almost impossible to identify with."

The actor then goes onto compare Taylor Lautner's shirtless performance to that of a child beauty pageant.

"The protagonists finally marry, having waited until the wise old age of eighteen, and since the book and the film dutifully show them being wed, they are then allowed to fuck each others' brains out. For a film that claims to be sexually responsible, the "Twilight" movies are awfully dependent on teenage sex to attract viewers.

The actors prance about like pieces of meat, their disturbingly developed bodies on full display; Taylor Lautner's rippling teenage chest is just a little better than the child beauty-pageant stars at the end of Little Miss Sunshine."

James Franco is sometimes funny, and sometimes pointed in his review prowess. It's hard to tell if he is being serious. Or if the review is itself is a comment on today's critical minefield.

Wow! really? you really need to read the books in order to understand some crap james franco! I actually had respect for you before this! My mom was 18 and my Dad was 20 when they married and they've been married for almost 28 freakin years! so stick that up your ass!

James Franco should NOT be reviewing this movie!! He needs to sit back and think about all of the POS movies hes done in his career!! I am not a teenage girl I am a 30 YO woman that loves the books and the movies. And I can't believe he would talk about Taylor Lautner like that when he is just a kid and worked very hard on his appearance to keep this role. He looks great and Franco looks like dog sh*t!! We don't need "experts" to review the movies we watch in the first place! I'm going to watch and like certain movies no matter what they say so there really is no point in having them and they should be jobless. And I have NO interest in that George Clooney movie what so ever!! Who gives a crap about the Oscars!!

@narrator i'm going to look up the review for myself, but good job breaking it down. And it's good to see you around here again. MW has has a dearth of intelligence lately, especially with some of the newbies.

Franco's right, but I think The Nostalgia Critic's review of Breaking Dawn is a lot better and a lot more informative and entertaining.

Twilight is a series that plays off a scary topic, but adds teenage sex in a overly pushy amount. With no REAL story, outside of a love story that is like a cheesy love novel, where Fabio would pose for the cover. Werewolves and Vampires should have a more darker tones. Interview with a Vampire is a great example of Vampire toned film. The Underworld movies also have a better tone for the dark character types then Twilight. When you put a Vampire in daylight like they did, you kill off the mystic of what has been known as Vampire since the first creation of the fear. I don't mind the Wolf Pack part as much, but a sparkly Vampire is what kills it to most. The under change in what it is to be a Vampire, beyond a thought they could be a Family and less blood suckers, is what makes this film so much a target to be hated. And the soap opera writing style for a love story, is what makes it a target to be loved so much, like those "Twilight Moms". My wife, who loves the books, and enjoys the movies, states that the movies have over sexed the characters and change some key plot points. My sister who also enjoys the books and movies, says, I quote her, "The movies make Bella out as a Hoe allot more, compared to the books, which show her as a typical youthful woman who was torn between her heart and mind when it came to the love of Edward and Jacob." I am no Twilight fan, but I do enjoy some elements of the films. Just not the love story, which is to me, poorly conveyed on film.

Alright, my thoughts on the full review? It started off well (I especially enjoyed the first two paragraphs), and he definitely makes several very valid points. But halfway through the review, you wonder if he's criticizing the film as a whole, or merely the lifestyles and circ*mstances that the characters find themselves in. He's clearly ticked at the writers, and while he does openly admit the Descendants is the better picture, he pulls up a few interesting flaws in that film as well. Still, I can't help but seem to think he sounds a bit too attached to what he's pitching, because he kind of rambles (like I do) in the latter half of his review.

Now, as a guy who lives in Hawaii, I can tell you, we have it pretty bad. I'm not saying third world country or anything like that, I'm just saying that all these films over here focus on the resorts, and wildlife rather than our own rural areas and ghettos, like Kalihi, Waianae, Wahiwa, and Chinatown (where I live). It's sad that we depend so much on tourism that films that take place here can't shed a fair light on our state. So I completely see his point there.

The comparisons between the two films? They sound relatively fair to me, because he also acknowledges, albeit briefly, some of the reasons why the descendants works and Breaking Dawn doesn't. So again, fine.

However, I'm missing the whole point where mother's are somehow devalued in the projects. I mean, they are, but it clearly wasn't the films immediate goals or intentions, and it's nothing that will subconsciously alter the way viewers view mothers, no more than other films that devalue the father figures worth does. Films are films, they eventually tend to balance these things out.

Anyways, my two cents on that. I thought it was an entertaining review, especially coming from him. Props, I guess.

@ejk1, agreed man. I'm gonna go look at the full review, and get back to you on that. I'm a bit biased in wanting to understand his logic, if only because a friend of mine has a friend who was the screenwriter for the Descendants.

@bawnian-dexeus Perhaps, perhaps not. The excerpts above may not tell the whole story of the review. Equal time may have been given to The Descendants. However, as MW wants to stir the pot a little, they post the part where he absolutely crushes Twilight. The result of course is that people who have a ridiculous hatred for Twilight will come here and take part in the bashing, while those with a ridiculously obsessive love for Twilight will vigorously defend it. Meanwhile, Franco's sophisticated criticism by comparison becomes lost in the shuffle, as does a good conversation, because instead of talking about the true worth of The Descendants, we are forced to go through yet another "Twilight: Does It Suck?" debate.

Twilight is not a guy movie but they could have taken it to the next level by making it better than what we been getting out of it. but since they didnt, lots of people r gonna diss it, and its gonna b alot hardly for those actors to get other roles w/out sum1 dissing them for their roles in the twilight sega.
