James Cameron's Avatar Continues Record-Breaking Run
The IMAX international release posted an estimated total of approximately $3.6 million from 70 IMAX screens during the weekend, with the IMAX network in Poland and Japan posting record openings. The film is still scheduled to open on 11 IMAX screens in China and one in Argentina in the coming weeks. The worldwide IMAX box office total is more than $39 million as of the end of day Sunday, December 27, 2009.
Avatar has been digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of "The IMAX Experience."
"Consumers are clearly seeking out IMAX as the way to experience James Cameron's latest blockbuster, and this weekend's results reinforce how well this groundbreaking film plays to our audience," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "'Avatar' is well on its way to becoming our highest grossing Hollywood IMAX title."
"To have reached $39 million from 249 screens in just 10 days demonstrates that moviegoers clearly understand the value of experiencing 'Avatar' in IMAX," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "James Cameron, Jon Landau and Lightstorm realized the vision of this film in IMAX, and we're continuing to see the incredibly positive way that moviegoers are responding to that vision."
Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.

I called Harkins Theaters at the Arizona Mills Mall In Tempe, Az... To see "AVATAR" 3-D IN IMAX @ Harkins the prices are: $15.00 Adults (All Times) ..and Childern Ages 3-13 (All Times) $11.00!!
Thank G_D for AMC Theaters prices before 12:00 Noon!!
.... In this struggling economy ...Who can afford $15.00 for a film ...Then on top of that .. add in .snacks, etc..!??!
......AMC is the place

I want to see AVATAR on IMAX .. The price for IMAX 3-D before 12 Noon at the AMC Deer Valley 30 in Phoenix, Az is 9.00 for a showing "BEFORE" 12 Noon ....& just for "Regular" 3-D W./Out IMAX is only $8.00 before 12:00 Noon ....... So the $1.00 Up-Grade won't kill me ...!!
......I already saw "AVATAR: in "Regular" 3-D opening weekend & loved it!!! ...A++
..I guess it's now off to the IMAX!!

It's not about the money, and I don't know why we should give a crap. We watch what we want, watch again what we like, buy what we love, and that's it. Ticket and DVD sales should only be of concern for those greedy executives.

I don't care if it beats TDK's record. A good movie is a good movie now matter what records it holds or doesn't hold.

as far as the dark knight records its not a huge deal to me. if it doesnt happen now with a film breaking it, then eventually it will.

i am really glad this did not fall flat, being disappointed in the last year... besides star trek and (effects lacking) the hangover, i was glad to finally see a movie that i left feeling satisfied with money well spent. Kudos to Cameron and the rest of the production team for their success. hopefully this means we will now definitely see a trilogy with cameron helming the next two as well.
