In a recent story from The Hollywood Reporter James Cameron unveiled 24 minutes of his 3D, sci-fi film Avatar at the Cinema Expo.
The film stars Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang. On hand at the RAI convention center (in addition to Cameron) to talk about this $300 million production were the film's producer Jon Landau, and Fox's Jim Gianopulos.
"Three years ago, I stood up here and said the 3D renaissance is coming," Cameron started. "And from what we've seen in the business, we can now say it has arrived."
In Avatar, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture.
Cameron said that the assemblage of footage he was showing came from the first third of the film. He also showcased some images from not yet finished portions of battle scenes later in the film. These involved the earthlings and the aliens fighting over control of the fantasy world Pandora.
According to Cameron, later in the film the action comes non-stop at viewers. Worthington will be "a remote-controlled character created by melding his crippled human form into a super-human being -- whose fate lies ultimately in doing battle with his own former race."
Members of the media that covered the event were not allowed to discuss Avatar images, nor could they interview members of the viewing audience. The footage that was screened received a very enthusiastic response.
Cameron is really ringing the bell for theater owners to bring out the new 3D capability. However, at present he knows that the film will have to play in both conventional and extra-dimensional venues.
"I just want to say that I think Avatar is going to play great in 3D, 2D, any 'D.' " said Cameron.
A lot of the technology that was used to record the actor's performances was created especially for Avatar, and the crews behind the effects at WETA Digital in New Zealand and Industrial Light + Magic in Northern California.
Avatar comes to theaters on December 18 from 20th Century Fox.
Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.

Yes, I also have a feeling this will pull a "Half-Blood Prince" and get pushed back to next summer. Hopefully not, but that's what it's looking like right now

Well thats people with verbally inaccurate information with uncredible sources, Comrade.
I agree with Alnk2, i reckon this will get pushed back till summer 2010.
Marketing campaign fails.........plus the part where it stated
' He also showcased some images from not yet finished portions of battle scenes later in the film.'
I see it getting pushed back, due to that and lack of public awareness.

I know, but Gandoff kept saying that Cameron stole it, and I hate it when people repeatedly spout verifiably false information on these boards.

I don't know what the fuss is about because "Avatar" has been dropped from the cartoon adaptation's name since...well, since the movie was announced.

I don't believe this sh*t is coming out in december. I think they are going to push it back a year or something.

Comrade speaks truth.
James Cameron attached the project name Project Avatar about 1998, this was during the time he announced he would be working on a Spiderman Film, he only wrote the first draft of the story outline proposal though to which became Sam Raimi's creation.
Avatar according to wikipedia first aired on febuary 21st 2005, major time gap there.

Gandoff, you keep saying that and I keep f*cking telling you: James Cameron had the name "Avatar" attached to his project before the CARTOON SERIES even existed. If anyone should change the name, or drop "Avatar" it's M. Night Shee-I'm a terrorist*.
*It's a joke

James Cameron and 20th Century Fox are really f*cking me off now.
No one knows off this film except critics, its been in pre-production / production for 12yrs, comes out in 6 f*cking months.
But yet where is the trailer, oooooo but wait here is a better idea, let show 24 minutes to an auidence and f*ck the trailer.
I see this filming bombing in the box-office, because the auidence/public are not aware of it.
He wants theatres to buy some new tech for this film and they are refusing. technically this will preferably in 3.D probably only in Imax.
But Cameron is taking the piss with this flick and i'm losing complete interest, i need something to regain that interest.

Camron is one of the few Directors that not only have a fresh look on his films, despite his age and length being in the buisness, but wants to take time to make a movie great to most, and very good to the rest. I might go see this one if the trailers are good. But I still am ticked he used the word Avatar, when it was on a title of another tv show to be movie. Call it stolen, call it a idea with out knowing what the word was already associated to. But to me, I think he could have changed the name after the fact.

A sloppy film takes less than a year, it looks to me that James wants to please his fans and not turn them off. Can't wait though.

it needs to have a website too and a trailer i guess james whants to keep waiting i guess for working on a movie for the past four years and now you whant make sure it is all work out before a website or a trailer is out to see. and all the new Technology that he is useing has not been used before so i guess that takes time too and you dont whant to rush notting i know i dont why they cant just have a photo up at a website for the movie and a teaser trailer...
