James Cameron to Write Avatar Prequel Novel

MTV spoke with Avatar producer Jon Landau who revealed that director James Cameron is beginning to write a prequel novel that could hit store shelves as early as Christmas.

Jim is going to write a novel himself. Not a novelization - and there is a distinction. A novelization basically retells the story of the movie. Jim wants to write a novel that is a big, epic story that fills in a lot of things.

It would be something that would lead up to telling the story of the movie, but it would go into much more depth about all the stories that we didn't have time to deal with - like the schoolhouse and Sigourney [Weaver's character] teaching at the schoolhouse; Jake on Earth and his backstory and how he came here; [the death of] Tommy, Jake's brother; and Colonel Quaritch, how he ended up there and all that.

There might be opportunities in publishing to tell some of the backstory, tell some of the Earth war stories, what went on in Jake's life before the movie. And we'd have that lead up to the sequel that might take place on Pandora several years after our movie closed.

The Avatar prequel would mark Cameron's debut as a novelist.

Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.

Avatar was mind blowingly awesome. Glad we got to the theater to see it the way it was meant to be seen...in 3D. Would love a sequel! Hope the novel is a best seller.

The visuals are mind blowing, that's all you really need to know. It's up to you to judge how the movie as a whole is.

The Avatar prequel will be in a book? And the sequel will be in a movie Avatar 2? Not bad!

It would be something that would lead up to telling the story of the movie, but it would go into much more depth about all the stories,

Definitely a weird pedophile shot, especially how his eyes are all sleepy looking. I can almost imagine him talking like the pedophile from Family Guy.

The Fallen got it pretty spot on with the pic. It's a "weird/creepy pedophile" that's what it is. But anyways, I would be more excited in watching the prequel instead of reading it, reason? That is just how I prefer it.

Actually yeah he looks like a weird/creepy pedophile in the pic. Lol. Glad someone else noticed it.

Anyways, I am with Rad and Insert. Avatar is not his best work, or the best movie ever. Entertaining and awesome, but not up there with Star Wars and definitely not up there with LOTR.

This isn't quite milking yet thou, because it has good intentions of more interesting and "original" stories in the Pandora universe. Milking would be something unneeded that is just to get money, which this is of course but to an extent.

Hopefully the book will have a better story than the movie as we hope the sequel will as well. However, the game the movie the book, the toy line, and thats where it should stop. Anything more will be unneeded and will be considered milking in my humble opinion.
After all guys, this is 20th Century FUX. Milking is what they do best now-a-days.

here's a daffed idea, Market it on a stripe down verion of the IPad, kinda like the Electro Comic-book for the Tom Hanks movie "Big" ... or something like the PDA's with the translucent screens from the "Avatar" movie, ya no jus made to store the novel, i no its not Eco friendly but its kinda different!

plz note the 1st 4 words in the Comment b4 anyone feels the need to say anything

Come to think of it, wasn't the whole point of Avatar to revolutionize how movies are made and seen, and to capture an unbelievable world on screen? So wouldn't a book just be milking it a little? I doubt words will have that much effect. Unless Cameron plans on cramming a sh*tload of shiny pictures into it and writing in a really cool font...

I really didn't see Avatar as franchise material, at least not enough to span books and stuff. Sequels, yes, but it's not like it's Star Wars or Lord of the Rings where an entire story is being told through multiple films, and an entirely different universe is established to explore. It was just Pandora, and Pandora was created with visuals, not words, in mind.

UNLESS THE WORDS POP OUT AT ME AND MAKE ME WANT TO COMMIT SUICIDE, F*CK THIS IDEA!!!!...unless...gasp!...Cameron's going to revolutionize the book industry now!

haha But in all seriousness, I'm sure die hard fans will be eager to read this...but I won't be buying it.

@MovieDreamer.. you can die right now if you think Avatar is up there with Star Wars. Star Wars was original and ahead of its time. This is just over hyped bullsh*t. Yes, the movie was good. Not great, but good. I'm really starting to dislike Cameron. I'm so fed up with all this Avatar crap. HE HAS MADE BETTER MOVIES!

  20. The Narrator: The Better Man

    Franchise alert is right.

I can't believe I gave him permission to do this. I mean I needed that sequel, the fans needed the sequel, even the delusional/suicidal people who want Pandora to be real; really needed that sequel, but he begged and begged, and even said something about the book being in 2D with pop up pictures that look 3D if you by the collectors edition (special glasses of course). That sold me right away. So here we are with a novel, NOT A SEQUEL, and more people will commit suicide due to a lack of Pandoras wondrous world.

Darn that Cameron, he has a way with words.
