James Cameron Talks Terminator 2 3D Conversion and Cleopatra

James Cameron considers Terminator 2 for 3D conversion
James Cameron is in the process of converting Titanic for 3D audiences, with a planned re-release set for 2012. He recently told The New York Times that he is considering Terminator 2: Judgment Day for conversion as well. Here is what he said:

"I think the true and correct use of the conversion technology is for movies that are already done and are already beloved films. I want to do it with Titanic, maybe I'll go back to Terminator 2: Judgment Day. It has to be done right, and it has to be done with the blessing and the supervision of the filmmaker."

About converting Titanic, James Cameron stated:

"Titanic has been out of theaters for, what, 12 years now? We're going to bring it out in 3-D as a theatrical re-release on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in 2012. It's an arbitrary length of time but it's a specific date -- it's a specific date that means something to people. There will be a lot of talk about the Titanic disaster in the news, and the nonfiction TV sector at that time. We're in the early stages of that process. We've been moving very slowly to make sure that we do it right, and we've basically gone to every single vendor who does 3-D conversion, that's a credible vendor, and there were seven that we have received tests from. We've analyzed the tests, in a couple of cases we sent them back and told them to remake parts of it, because it was unacceptable, and now we're baking off the different vendors against each other and we're going to choose the top two or three vendors and we're going to split the show up between them. That's our game plan. So we maximize the quality. Everybody's busy now because there's a lot of conversion work."

James Cameron also touched on the possibility that he may direct Angelina Jolie in Cleopatra before directing Avatar 2:

"I wouldn't say (Avatar 2 is) inevitable because we still haven't worked out our deal with 20th Century Fox. So we're still in an ongoing negotiation on that. Because it's a big piece of business, and I'm trying to map it out as a game plan that stretches forward 10 years. And they don't like to think that long term. We'll get it worked out, probably. I would assign a high probability to that. Whether that's my next film or not remains to be seen. There's a Cleopatra project in work, meaning that it's been in development at Sony. And it's a subject that's always fascinated me. So yeah, I've been talking to them about it but no decisions have been made. But it sounds hot, doesn't it? I mean, Angelina Jolie and Cleopatra? To me, that's like a slam-dunk. Whether I wind up doing it or not, I think it's going to be a great project."

James Cameron's true masterpiece films was "Terminator 2 Judgment Day" and "Terminator".
Other good films was "True Lies", "Aliens" and "abyss".
But "Avatar" and "Titanic" sucked big balls.
Cameron is one of the best directors we have today.
But George Lucas is an idiot, re-doing his f*cking "Star Wars" films for a third f*cking time?

@Worth5bucks i kind of disagree with u on the part of it influencing Jurassic Park. Dennis Muren offered some advice to spielberg and showed him his test of a cgi trex and spielberg stuck with it. Cameron to me now a days is a decent director, i just hate the fact that he keeps reminding us of avatar. HE HAS TO MOVE ON. 3D isnt film. Film is always 2d. It has always been.

Better Terminator 2 than Titanic. I don't have a problem with Cameron's 3d movement. I accept the fact that one day all movies will be in 3d. I don't like wearing 3d glasses but i know one day that will pass. Cameron is all about progress, and i respect him for this. People don't seem to realize how much he has helped change the movie industry. Not many people know that if it weren't for Cameron's Terminator 2 a good deal of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park would have been in stop motion. I have no doubt that one day when we no longer need glasses to watch 3d films Cameron will have a great deal to do with it.

I really hope he does Cleopatra but I could care less about a T2 conversion. Cameron is a talented guy but he needs to stick to new material.

@daveactor 7... actually you can count out terminator because another writer claimed to have had the terminator based on a couple of his stories, and was paid off by the film studio and was acknowledged at the end of the credits too. i havent read the stories so i dont know how closely related the two are.

i for one would love to see T2 in 3D, although i think that 3D is a trend and will fade in the next few years, even with the explosions of 3D TV (hey manufacturers have been doing it for years... remember the atkins diet? thought so!) anyhow, it would be great released on its 20 year anniversary however i dont think that would happen beings how it is next year.

  22. The Narrator: The Better Man

@Dave, I can do that anytime of day. But it would still be a lot cooler on Imax. After all, would we be pissed if Star Wars was re-released (the original tril)? Maybe a little, but we'd still see it.

As for Battle Angel, it is really a cool idea, and it would be a pretty big success with or without Cameron's name if adapted right. Sounds more up his alley than Cleo. I'd leave that type of a film to Ridley Scott or something. However, if they had a futuristic twist to Cleopatra (butchered it), setting it in the future, in a different society, ala Blade Runner, then I think Cameron could do epicness. I just don't see him taking a period piece seriously. I could be wrong.

James Cammeron is a genuis when it comes to writing and directing. But the idea of him going back and converting his greatest films to 3D is makeing him out to be nothing more then a gold digger of a media kind.

  26. The Narrator: The Better Man

His best film was definitely The Abyss.

Anyways, I may be alone here, but I am going to see Titanic in Imax. I mean, the timing is perfect, and lets face it, if you have a romantic girlfriend, what are you gonna do? I'm glad to see he's taking the conversion very seriously and splitting the film between 3 different vendors. An hour per company, which makes it go faster, all the while ups the quality. Smart.

As for his upcoming films, he better do Battle Angel next. Seriously.
