Winning the http://www.xprize.org|X-Prize} will just be a bonus for James Cameron in his quest to the bottom of the sea, as his real goal is to be able to travel deep underwater to shoot the film. The X-Prize is an award given to pioneers in privately funded science and exploration. It was previously given to the first team to build a privately funded, manned spacecraft and launch it out of Earth's atmosphere. Now it's going to the first private crew to make two manned dives to Challenger Deep, the deepest surveyed point in all of Earth's oceans. Last weekend it was reported that James Cameron has commissioned a bespoke submarine, built of high-tech, man-made composite materials and powered by electric motors, which will be capable of surviving the tremendous pressures at a depth of seven miles, from which he will shoot 3D footage that may be incorporated in Avatar 3's sequel.
No one has visited Challenger Deep since explorers Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh made the journey half a century ago. The X-Prize was announced to commemorate their voyage.

Avatar 2 comes to theaters in 2014. The film is directed by James Cameron.
Avatar 3 comes to theaters in 2015. The film is directed by James Cameron.

Yea they are adding 3d to titanic. i wonder who will buy this, i know 4 a fact it wont b me. i already own titanic. As for Avatar ya i agree on the fact that it will b shot in blue screens. maybe even imax. but im not feeling the 6.8 mile joy ride tho. i dont think it really matters. Avatar should have had more than 1 ending.

@JasonKat are you kidding? no matter how much money james cameron spends he will always make more back. And he's doing it more for exploration and ideas for avatar 2, avatar 2 will still be almost completely blue screens.

@Messenger They're not doing a titanic 2. At least not James Cameron. They are going to go back and add 3d to the first.

the movie..THE ABYSS was good, he didnt go that far to making it. The movie Oceans is like perfect over and under its waters ,sure it wasnt 6.8 miles or watever but its still had its clear picture of wat lies under us. Camerson, doesnt REALLY need to shoot anything that deep.now adays directors use blu screens for that, James can use them too like he did in avatar, but he just wants to i guess do sumthing nobody has ever done b4. but hes just waastin more money trying than wat he will eventually b making back.

It's cool to see he's effectively using profits to spearhead more technological advancements. Onwards and upwards, but in this case, downwards (you know, ocean depths, whatever)

Yeah, I've gotten into my tiffs with people on here but it's really pointless. Movies are about having fun not how much you know about them or the artistic value (both are great things to have in movies and value them highly) but it's about the experience, enjoyment of escaping from reality and being somewhere else for a bit. People on here flex nuts way to much and I wish they would just sit back and chill.

@Messenger yeah we should stop arguing lol i see ur point. Alright everyone this argument is pointless. There are lovers and haters. Period.

If everyone in the film industry was as ambitious as Cameron is technologically in whatever it was they want to achieve, being one of the 10 best picture nominees of the year would TRULY be an honor.

@Brian shut up because your not educated as well. Saying James Cameron doesnt give a sh*t about us. Well he doesnt give a sh*t about you either. Avatar was not a movie because it did not have all the fundamentals of filmmaking. The movie that had that last year was the hurt locker and it was spectacular movie then this. This movie had such a boring story if it was better i wouldve liked it.

The Narrator: The Better Man
I'm definitely not the biggest Cameron fan, but this is pretty cool. I give the guy props when due, and this is one of those times. Sure it's unnecessary, but so is porn, yet half of america watches that. Anyways, I honestly wish him the best of luck, and I hope it all turns out well.
@daveactor... I liked Avatar. Don't get me wrong, the story was completely worn out, but not calling it a movie.. I don't know. Just because something lacks originality, doesn't make it any less of a feature film, especially with the visual creativity behind Pandora, and the films outstanding success. As a "filmmaker" you should understand that. Not saying the guy is God or anything of the sort, but I do appreciate the things he does in the industry. Example: Abyss. That was a fantastic movie, and it was also a breakthrough in movie making. So if you hate the man, fine. But don't take it overboard with wishing him death. Probably half of the directors you worship were inspired to be a filmmaker after seeing Terminator or Aliens or what not, for the first time.

@daveactor7 Dude, we all know that you hated Avatar and you hate James Cameron but enough already. You complaining is not going to do anything, Cameron will continue to make movies, deal with it and just don't see his movies. Simple as that.

Structure (ONSTRA)
haha anyone who thinks this is not a great ideaaa... just needs to get a life.. you're looking too much into this thing.. its creative and good and a new technology in film making.. why not, he's not asking you guys to go with him.. and ppl usually hate successful projects. in case you haven't noticed most movies coming out during these 2 years have some bad usual story.. the story is important but the technology is also becoming just as important.. and i bet you a million times that if the story was more complicated than this it wouldn't be as enjoyable.. and you guys would call it "Over-Done" and get lost in it. and in this simplicity you can't get a different plot. but creativity doesn't have to be only in the plot.. Get over it and watch the movie if you enjoyed it you did. if not who cares.. it takes creativity to make the world of pandora. and i am so excited to just see the new world of pandora underwater. and i absolutely am ready for it. BRING IT ON!!

dark knight:the only shine "the dark knight" ever had to itself was HEATH LEDGER doing the joker we all wanted to see. nothing else. but enough of "that" movie already. CAMERON said something about using 3-D as a new means of serious storytelling and movie making and not as in some corny 50's styled B-movie new sensation for film viewers, and i absolutely and most totally agree. the reason GEORGE LUCAS created I.L.M. and SKYWALKER SOUND was all for a more better means of sound and visual illustration effects, and now,it's not only a new "avant guarde" movie making,it is now the new norm, and THAT is what JAMES CAMERON intended with the new v3-D technology. and i pray,it(like the aforementioned I.L.M. and SKYWALER SOUND)become an all new norm in this new millenium's film making industry.
