James Cameron Reveals His Pre-Planned Avatar Sequel

James Cameron reveals plans for an Avatar sequel
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that James Cameron had started making plans for a sequel to Avatar during production. The director stated, "I've had a storyline in mind from the start - there are even scenes in Avatar that I kept in because they lead to the sequel. It just makes sense to think of it as a two or three film arc, in terms of the business plan. The CG plants and trees and creatures and the musculo-skeletal rigging of the main characters - that all takes an enormous amount of time to create. It'd be a waste not to use it again."

Sam Worthington is already signed to do a sequel, and he sent Entertainment Weekly his ideas for a sequel, joking, ""Jake should have abused his avatar and be fat and unfit and demand Neyteri to get him a beer."

With Avatar heading into its fifth week of release, Fandango is reporting that 80% of its recent tickets sales have been for the 3D and IMAX presentations of the film. While 73% of this weekend's ticket sales have been for Avatar. 7% have been for Denzel Washington's Book of Eli, and Peter Jackson's is bringing up the rear with just 5% of ticket sales.

So far, Avatar has made $1.42 billion worldwide, passing Shrek 2's domestic take of $441.2 million to become the fourth highest grossing film of all time with $445.7 million. It's only lagging behind Star Wars which stands at $460.9 million, The Dark Knight with $533.3 million, and James Cameron's own with $600.8 million.

Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang, and Matt Gerald . It is in theaters now.

Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.

The poetic Kwisatz Haderch exclaims, "The story line doesn't really matter." A fitting slight-of-hand comment to those schooled in the MK-Ultra techniques. So, according to him, you can rap special effects around any meaningless plot and achieve the same effect. Read this link - bishopsgait.blogspot.com - then get a statistician to explain to you how this movie and this individual epitomizes FRAUD!

Happy to hear your comment about Avatar here man (The Kwisatz Haderach), (hehe). Art lovers definitely would learn a lot from him, he just knows how to balance everything in his work. This coming sequel will definitely be way more of this creativity, cause as observed, he is great with sequels namely, Terminator 2, Aliens, & let me include Piranha II & consider Titanic. I honor him a lot with this one because of the success of this truly-owned-original-jim-story-not-sold-(yet), Avatar.

the storyline was basic, but it doesn't really matter, the focus is on the world in which the story takes place. I took a a class in college that stated there are really only like 40 story arcs out there and everything is a rehash of something. the storyline worked well with Avatar, it set the scene, but the world that Cemron envisioned and created blew my mind. Studying 3D animation in college the sh*t he pulled off was spectacular. Just goes to show that you dont have to have a wild complex storyline to achieve a great film. Its what you put in and around the story that makes in unique.

I know what my screen name implies lol, but personally I'd like to see him take a break, do Battle Angel Alita and that japanese guy's story about surviving the 2 nuclear blasts in ww2, then come back to Avatar. Give him time to think about it while on other projects. The actors will get a chance to branch out into other projects, avoiding being typecast, and when they come back together, it'll feel like a family reunion, and the sequal will be fantastic.

Hey guys I usually just lurk but I felt like I had to post this time around. I haven't seen Avater yet so I can't judge it. But "unobtainium" is not original to this movie. As I recall in the movie "The Core"(2003) the metal used on the ship to make it safely through the magma was called "unobtainium". Hell, I'm not a big sci-fi guy so maybe there might even be more instances in other movies, etc. Anyway I just felt that that was kind of ironic is all.

Brian, you're being a bit bias because you hate comic book movies. For a fan, those movies are/will be the best of the best. And as far as story goes, they had better character development and on comic book movie terms, they were original...while Avatar is pretty much Dances with Wolves with aliens. But that doesn't mean I think Avatar is over hyped liked it...it's a cinematic achievement and deserves success. I'm being fair...why can't you?

I don't understand the people ho say the story is not original , Cameron never said it was an original story, it is a mix of stories from the sci-fi books he has read. He worked his ass of for years to make this movie and you in general the audience love this freaking movie, so stop bitching and winning and enjoy it !

Unobtanium, a super conductor mineral (Avatar meaning), so rare on earth, so rich on Pandora. The planets solar system is 4.4 lightyears from us. Planet Pandora is actually one of many moons of the gas planet Polyphemus. Sky-people (Earth Ones) want to dig more of this mineral ($20M/kg) and maybe why there'll be a sequel. There's a free download of Avatar screenplay here on MW. Please warn me if this is too much.

    Iron Man = Overrated
    Iron Man 2 = Over-hyped
    The Dark Knight = Overrated
Avatar = Under-hyped / Overrated? Who's overrating it? If anything, everyone is trying to underrate it...and it's a bigger success than any sh*tty movie in the last 10 years... that says something...

The first film had a generic cliche hollywood story and had no creativity with the names (pandora, adaptanium), lets hope the second one doesn't ay? I'm sick of this chosen one bullsh*t, we need better stories, after all story over quality, Avatar was all style and polish but no substance. If you can tell me one section of the story that hasn't been done before, I will shut up but for now Avatar is one of the most overrated films this year.

Also, wanted to lay this all on you kids...

I read in Entertainment Weekly that supposedly Pandora is one of many moons surrounding a gas giant planet. Apparently James Cameron always planned for these sequels to occur, where he'd be exploring these other moons.

I personally don't think anyone on the internet has an original thing to say. I thought the story was perfect, and the dialog complimented it very well. But you guys all just keep saying the same sh*t over and over again. You guys are like Hollywood....constantly rehashing the same ideas! Someone say something original PLEASE!

  25. Dan

I'm all for a sequal, so long as Cameron has help with the script this go around. Thoroughly loved the movie, but the dialogue needs major improvement.

The best part is the second movie will have a chance to really flesh out the Avatar universe like Empire Strikes Back did. It's free to build on all the characters, and complicate the hell out of the story, leading into an even more epic battle for the third film.
