Jaden Smith Is the Next Karate Kid

Columbia Pictures is karate-chopping up a new version of the 1984 hit The Karate Kid, which is being tooled as a starring vehicle for Jaden Smith.

According to Variety, the film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. Will Smith, who is the 10-year-old actor's father, co-starred alongside Jaden in his feature debut, The Pursuit of Happyness, which Overbrook and Escape Artists produced for Columbia.

The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.

    The Karate Kid...the story line does not need to be with Daniel and Miyagi. It can be any youth fighting against bullies and has a mentor to tran him/her. I see how they will do this. BUT, I don't think it will work.

    I totally agree. It seems like Hollywood's new genre is remakes and this is another one that needs to be reconsidered. The original was a good movie for its time but lets get real, it wasn't something that should be remade and should not star Jaden Smith. He's too young and too short. I'm sickened by the fact that Hollywood has seem to run out of ideas in recent years and they try and make a buck by making remakes of somewhat classics to generate some revenue.
