It seems that Platinum Dunes may have found its leading nightmare man for its upcoming remake. According to Bloody-Disgusting, Jackie Earle Haley is entering final negotiations to portray Freddy Krueger in Platinum Dunes' new remake, A Nightmare on Elm Street.

It was reported by Latino Review in February that Haley was indeed locked to play Krueger, and while that wasn't exactly the case back then, it seems to be moving towards reality now. Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that an official announcement should be expected as early as next week.

A Nightmare on Elm Street was said to start production at the end of this month in Chicago, with Samuel Bayer directing.

UPDATE: (4/3/09 1:30 PM PST)Bloody-Disgusting is now reporting that Kyle Gallner (The Haunting in Connecticut) has joined the A Nightmare on Elm Street cast as well.

It was said he will play the role of Quentin, a podcast host and seen as the equivalent of Johnny Depp's character in the original film.

A Nightmare on Elm Street was released April 30th, 2010 and stars Jackie Earle Haley, Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, Kellan Lutz, Clancy Brown, Connie Britton. The film is directed by Samuel Bayer.

I agree with people that Haley is technically the only person that pull off Freddy Kruger for this day and age.
But as a fan of these franchise since the 24 years its been around, i'd rather see a prequel than a remake.
With Haley in the starring role.

This remake will be plastered with guts, gore and SFX, and very similiar killings, because they've stated they are taking a lot from the original, therefore making it a remake not a reboot.
Then once the film does well, then they will want to turn it into a franchise because it money-grabbing Hollywood, but by the time this film is done Jackie will be on the 50 mark, will he want to contiue this character...
Because he stated he will only do one if he accepts the role.

Which i don't understand why Movieweb hasn't posted that scoop that i gave them yet, because it also says that the dude that played Ozimaydayus in Watchmen (i know i spelt the name wrong)
he is the lead to play Pinhead in the Hellraiser remake

Taciwa: I dunno if you've seen Watchmen or any of his other recent roles, but the dude can definitely act. I personally think he can pull it off, just by seeing his performance in Watchmen, which was the highlight of that movie, I believe he'll do a great job.

This is my first time here. After hearing the news today of my favorite movie of all time, I had to share my thoughts to someone. When I found ou that Robert wasn't going to be in the new film, yes it was sad, but then I thought A nightmare on elm street really needed something fresh. All I have to say is this, coming from a true fan for 21 years, if Haley accepts this role, He needs to do a great job,(not a good job)for Robert England's name and for the die hard fans like myself.I think he can. But we'll see. Talk to you guys in April of 2010.

Yeah but its interesting to know the backstory, what was Kruger like as a human, we only saw him as a human in Part 6.
The back story could be so dramatic but still horrific at the same time.

I reckon this should be a prequel rather a remake. The prequel has been a longly anticipated film between the fans of the Nightmare franchise since New Nightmare.

Acording to Hollywood they can't find a way to create a Nightmare Prequel, which i've found and written a treatment for a very developed Kruger Prequel

    Another pointless remake!!!

No, j.a. ottley, a Full backstory movie focusing on Frederick Charles Kruger's human killing spree is Not as interesting because the latter supernatural nightmare Freddy is diminished in play, the Hook of what makes him a horror icon, not just another slasher (which we all know.)

As far as Haley not doing more than one feature, that's probably just a negotiating tactic for more money. I imagine he'd have alot of fun with this role and would want to reprise it.

This Remake will be a surefire hit.

    Good point made, Vis.
But Hayley definately i reckon can be the only one that live up to Englund, i haven't seen 310 to Yuma remake yet...that is the one where Ben Foster plays a socio psychopath something like that right?

Also Hayley stated on his IMDB Pro blogs that he will only do one film, if he gets the role, and you and I both know the next-generation fans and Hollywood will want another film, so we will have a different kruger in the sequel, which to me seems completely wrong because Kruger has always been Englund.

I reckon Hayley needs to portray him in a prequel as the Spingwood Slasher not Freddy Kruger, the dream slayer, his backstory can fit into one film and that makes everyone happy, rather than reboot a franchise.

Also IMDB PRO announced this, that Wes Craven read the script and refused to be a producer, because the script was basly written
    &
Engluind also refused to be part of the film, which he never stated why.

Also another note, they will want to turn this into a brand new franchise like they are doing with the Friday & Halloween remakes, now can Haley continue the role after the first movie, because his nearly hitting the 50 mark, and let's face it Haley is the best choice for Kruger

  23. J.A.Ottley.Writer / Director

No, annoying film critic, they want to make a Nightmare Remake which will partially explore Kruger's backstory, not his complete backstory. Your basically gonna see what Marge Thompson told Nancy in the basement when she showed the glove to Nancy in the boiler room.
So were possibly looking at an opening montage revealing who Kruger is from the beginning of the film, like the FVJ montage opening or the TCM remake opening.

The point i'm putting across though, what is more interesting...
A nightmare remake which will partially show Kruger's backstory? (which we all know)

    or

A prequel which explores Fredrick Charles Kruger's complete and full backstory as the Springwood Slasher, if they do the research Kruger has enough backstory for a full-length feature

  28. AnnoyingFilmCritic

The answer is yes, they can make a better Nightmare on Elm Street.

Casting Haley is promising as well as today's level of special effects that will frighten and raise the stakes in the story.

Kruger has a good backstory, not so much actual character development. I think I read somewhere that the producers want to explore his backstory, which adds even more promise that this remake stands a better chance impacting the fans than other reboots.

  29. J.A.Ottley.Writer / Director

Also can you really make Nightmare on Elm St better than what it already is?

They've got a director whose never ever directed a feature length film only done music videos for rock bands...
And a screenwriter that is a hit and miss but poor in character development, Kruger is the most developed character out of all horror icons within the slasher/horror genre

Ok this is a big pile of bull, Jackie Earle Hayley stated himself that he has dropped the role.
IMDB Pro confirmed this, so did Jackei Earle Hayley himself hence forth why A Nightmare On Elm Street 2010 has been taken off his filmography
