Jack Kirby's Estate Takes Aim at Marvel/Disney

The estate of the man who helped create some of the most memorable comic book characters in history is taking up a legal battle. According to The New York Times, the estate of comic book legend Jack Kirby has sent out notices of copyright termination to Marvel, Sony, Universal, Fox and other studios who have produced films based off his characters.

The estate sent out 45 copyright termination notices last week, and they state the desire of Kirby's estate to retain copyrights on characters he created by the year 2014.

Kirby passed away in 1994 but his work with Stan Lee has left a lasting legacy in both comics and film. Kirby was involved in such works that have been popular film fodder today such as The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and The Avengers.

Well what if it's completely opposite? What if Disney knows how awesome those Marvel characters are so they will support them hence why they bought them up. It would suck if the Kerby family had complete control and didn't let them do jack sh*t with the characters cause they want to keep them as people remember them as. Maybe they don't want more movies made of these characters cause they think they don't live up to their own names. I mean if you think about it, most people have a bad taste in their mouth when you mention Spiderman 3 lol. As if it had ruined the other movies and Spiderman's name just because it wasn't as good as the other films. It's kind of true in a sense, if the movie is good, the name will be even bigger like Batman is now. But if a studio makes a "sh*tty" version of a legendary character, people remember that and view that character negatively because of that. Kinda silly but it happens. I still love these characters even if there are sh*tty movies about them. Mostly because I have hope that they will either remake them or have a sequel that gives them justice.

ooop, sorry, didnt catch that mispelling, thanx lol

but yeah, i third that mention of marvel and disney, it was a mistake for them to merge with the mouse, i was rooting for marvel cuz they were a comic book film company who was standing on their own and giving the characters justice to the fans out there who were dissapointed by previous films done by other companies.

but now that disney is in the pic, i dont know bout marvel studios, well see once the next couple of films come out and see if they still have that marvel feel to it, or if disney gonna make them more kiddie movies

i can see where J.A. is coming from on the flipside bout the Kirby family doing this to keep control on the characters and have them true to Jacks interpretation, not to what disney may want them to be.

wether its keeping the characters true or them wanting a piece of the pie for the big cash, lets just hope marvel studios keeps on track and continues to stand its own ground to giving us quality movies

No Ottley, you're not the only one who thinks that. The mouse must be hooked crack all of a sudden, or eaten up some rat poison.

They were doing so good, with getting rid of Eisner, hooking back up with Pixar, and creating their own CGI animation studio, not to mention the Pirates franchise. Now they just flushed everything down the toilet at once. I mean, what the Hell happened!?

Well according to some reports they are attacking the films first that have gone into production, alla Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Fantastic 4, etc etc.
So ladies and gentlemen don't expect an Avengers movie anytime soon.

Basically these lot just don't want to see the legacy their father built shambled by a kid friendly studio that only thinks for the profit and not for the fans, henceforth why they are taking everything that Jack Kirby created away from Marvel unless they get negotiation deals, gross in profits and complete creative control, because then this way Disney doesn't really have a say what goes down, so the last part is really a pretty good point made, considering this was one of the major matters that fans were concerned for, when Marvel folded into Disney.

They are taking everything from Marvel because now Disney has a major creative control over the Marvel films in all studios, henceforth the copyright terminations to all studios.

Is it me or am i the only one thinking that Disney buying Marvel then firing Cook was the 2 biggest mistakes they ever made, they thought they were good moves but they turned sour very quickly.

bane5000, Actually it's "couldn't care less". Sorry, just one of my pet peeves. Nobody gets that right.

I agree with you, that the Kirby family is seeing dollar signs, but Marvel movies have been doing good for a couple of years now. This bombshell just hit a week or so after the Disney deal went through, so that must be the "Chah-ching" that we're talking about.

Better said than done for the family to get jobs. Maybe they have jobs already, but not good ones, and see this as a free meal ticket. Would we do the same? I guess we could never answer that unless we were in their shoes. They might be hurtin', or they might be as you say, "greedy".

I couldn't do that, just because I wouldn't want to be viewed as such a pariah, in the eyes of comic book movie fans.

I agree with Ottley, that Disney may drift from the sourse material and may actually one day have a Marvel hero save The Little Mermaid from Ursela.

Here we go guys. The first shot has been fired. Let's see how long it takes for us to be able to see any other comic book hero movies after IRON MAN 2, and whatever else gets out of the gate before it's locked.

Disney ups the ante, now Kirby's estate sees a bigger steak to chomp on. Where were they when the deal went down?

Disney had to go and screw everything up. Damn greedy mouse!

Technically basically what these guys want is part of the profits, negotiations in the deals and creative control, they believe that Disney will water them down and drift from the source material, like so many other adaptations have.

if the family was so serious bout securing Kirbys legacy, they wouldve done so when he passed away in '94, but marvel wasnt really doing well back then so his family could care less bout his work

but now that Marvel is gaining momentum and kicking ass with its movies and the new callabo with Disney...CHING CHING..Kirbys family is seing the dollar signs and now want to take action...gee. almost 20 YEARS LATER

its a shame when someone who put his heart in soul in characters and company to just have his greedy family want to reap the rewards years later when he isnt around to speak for himself.

get up and make ur own money Kirby family, go get a job...they probably just couldnt get jobs at Marvel and are mad, boo hoo hoo HAHAHAHA

It's always the Estate of such and such. In other words the greedy families who are too f*cking lazy to get a job like their Grandfather/Father/husband did.
All Kirby wanted was recognition of his work.
