J.J. Abrams Is Directing Star Trek 2
While many assumed he would make the follow-up to his 2009 hit, he would never give a date for the project, or actually say for sure that he would be the one directing. In July, reports elsewhere surfaced that Abrams was "moving towards a commitment" to direct the sequel but his delay had pushed a nervous Paramount Pictures to give Star Trek 2 late June 2012 release date to a G.I. Joe sequel.
According to Vulture, part of the hold-up has been that Alex Kurtzman, who wrote Abrams' first Star Trek with Roberto Orci, has been busy editing and posting Welcome to People, his directing debut at DreamWorks Pictures. We're told that now that Kurtzman is finished with those duties, he is back in his office and the team is ready to work.
Screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are writing the script.
Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto and the rest of the main cast are all set to return. The sequel was originally set to come out June 2012, but the film wanted to give the writers enough time to finalize the script.
No production date has been set.
Star Trek 2 comes to theaters May 17th, 2013 and stars Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

I can't say I wouldn't have gone to see the second one if Abrahms wasn't directing, but given the success of the first one, I figured Abrahms' return would be inevitable and the obvious choice.

@dan1 f*ck that... its never too soon! i say get some of those fan boys at the trekkie conventions, round em up, grab a big white van and kidnap j.j. and force him to sign a contract in his own blood to do ST3 as well... hell we all know the fanboys are in, had it not been for abrams, they may have just been trading in their federation shirts and vulcan ears for some lightsabers and jedi cloaks!

@brian Good. I don't even want to think about the other scenario.

@ejk1 That's exactly what I'm saying. It's all about release dates and summer tentpoles with the studios, and yes, G.I. Joe was looking to snag what would have been Star Trek 2's slot, therefore pushing Trek 2 into uncertainty. An uncertainty that Abrams did not want to commit to. Obviously, this story is proof they worked that all out, and here Abrams has committed.

@brian Are you actually saying that GI Joe 2 almost denied Abrams from directing Star Trek? The sequel of a critically bashed film almost hurt a sequel to a critically praised film. That's absurd to even think about.

@dan1 -- It was kind of fast-paced, but J.J. Abrams didn't want to make it mindless fun with no story, I guess. So he added a lot of those slow, emotional scenes, and so on. I feel as if I could've went into my detail explaining what I didn't enjoy, but I saw the movie about 2-years-ago.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Fair enough, it sounds to me like the Star Trek stuff just isn't your thing to begin with, since you mentioned you don't watch the shows. I find it hard to believe you found it boring when it moved at a lightning pace, but you gave several reasons, good enough for me.

@dan1 -- Concerning the "but after the protagonist is no longer a child, I no longer enjoyed the movie." - I felt that might have come out the wrong way, and I'll clarify by saying that I no longer enjoyed it because it went in a different route than I anticipated.

@dan1 -- I should've said I didn't "enjoy" the movie - which would have made it a much more appropriate statement. Well, I found the movie boring - the action scenes were well-placed and well-done, but I didn't like the melodrama, I don't and won't watch the TV show - so I couldn't careless about a lot of the stuff they put on-screen. Example: The sub-plot about the mom being human and all.
The acting was okay, nothing more. The make-up/costume, etc-were outstanding, and I loved the special effects/sound. I liked the opening-sequence, but after the protagonist is no longer a child, I no longer enjoyed the movie. I think if I were to add everything up for this movie, it may get 6.0 - but that doesn't derive from the fact that I just didn't enjoy my time watching it.
