It's Thundercats, Ho! on the Big Screen!

Movie Picture
Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the toy store, "Pow!" They hit you with another upper left. The Transformers movie is doing wonders for 80s nostalgia. First, we reported earlier this week that a G.I. Joe movie was on the way. Maybe. Now, Variety is reporting that Warner Brothers plans to make a Thundercats film.

Can you believe it? Unlike Transformers and G.I. Joe, not to mention The Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake, The Thundercats were one of the only 80s toy spin-off cartoons that didn't get a big screen animated film back in the day. Well, they sure are making up for that now.

Untested screenwriter Paul Sopocy has been hired to pound out the script. He will be using the outline of the cartoon as a jumping off point. The weekday afternoon program revolved around Lion-O and his cat hair-covered buddies. The stories were almost identical to every other cheaply produced animated cartoon show out there at the time. The half-hour was used mainly to sell more toys.

The Thundercats have been around since 1983. Not only did they star in several different versions of their afternoon cartoon show, they also had their own comic book line, which was published by both Marvel and D.C.

The film does not yet have a start date.

Let's hear it for Hollywood milking every ounce of the nostalgia from the 80's. Here's a fine example of how nobody in Hollywood can come up with an interesting and ORIGINAL idea. This goes up as one of the stupidest ideas for a movie, along with Speed Racer. Just because a cartoon was succesful in the 80's, doesn't mean a live action movie should be made. Looking back, I feel the only 2 cartoons that can be made into fun to watch movies are Transformers and G.I. Joe. They should leave dead cartoons dead.
