Gears of War looks to be on hold
The site reports that the size and scope of the story along with the budget have been pared back by the studio and also that director Len Wiseman has officially left the project as well. It was said that Wiseman was leaving the project to direct the new film Nocturne. We reported back in November that Wiseman was in talks to direct the film and now the site reveals the deal is official.
It was said that the story has been trimmed down to more of an invasion-style film, as opposed to a lengthy war epic that was said to have cost more than $100 million to make. They are now aiming at a budget far less than that, although a specific budget figure wasn't given. New Line is currently looking for a new writer to rework the original script by Wanted screenwriter Chris Morgan.
As for Wiseman's Nocturne, the site reports that Iron Man writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are writing the film. Casting hasn't started yet and it was said the title could change as well.

This is not looking good. The Gears franchise has immense potential as a film property and if the studio plays it's cards right they very well could have a very successful film franchise on their hands, but from the above article it sounds like they are already f*cking with the source material.
I am saying this not to single out anyone, but if some of you guys who are mentioning wrestlers for these roles raised your standards a bit and refused to see underwhelming films with untalented actors who are just thrown in because of what they look like, maybe Hollywood would finally get the point and stop dicking around with the sh*t we care about. You need a good story (which Gears already has) good acting and directing in the mix to get a well to do film. Couple that with good effects work and you got a winner. If they can't do that, then I agree with Doom. I would rather see a sharp CG film done by EPIC GAMES then a train wreck of a live action film.

what good is a movie with just good special effects? if they throw crap actors into any movie, paul walker, channing tatum, etc, then what f*cking good would any movie be with just good effects? what if paul walker had been cast as the joker, dark knight still as good? movies need to be great on all fronts

They do know that war is in the title and the reason this games rock is because of it's sole war story. And how the hell can it bean invasion movie Emergence Day should be included but not the whole movie based on that day.

I'll direct this under budget and it will be a bad ass film. This movie doesn't need to be epic (no pun intended) it needs to be gritty, hardcore with a great cast and the Locust have to be done VERY well.

SHIFTING WARS TO DISASTER AND BORES- Something with far more potential than a "Halo" movie yet production is going to go low budget? My thoughts are they should scrap it until a good director with a HIGH budget can pick this up again... The story should remain intact... ! We are not waiting til 2012 to see a film about a recycle of ideas when that game has a story that should stand on its own! Keep the budget and let the gears run like how they should!

@War-Machine: Why not both? I mean, bring out the proper people to work on the Gears of War movie, stick to how the game laid it out, not some "trimmed down bullsh*t" and then bring out Gears of War 3.
@righthandofdoom: Great point there, if they need Wrestlers to play those parts, and that's ONLY at the VERY last resort. They ought to move forward with this, if it's done right, it could make a ton of money.

This sucks. They are going to mess this movie up. There is no way they can make a movie based on that game for $100 million. Its not enough. I would rather just have the guys that make the game to a CG movie than see it ruined by doing it live action. Especially when there were rumors of getting wrestlers to play some of the parts. I dont want to see any wrestlers in a gears of war movie. They are not good actors.

@Todd, Len Wiseman is not a coward. He was working on this for years, and had a rather epic tale being made, and it was right in front of the studio... but it was too huge, the studio backed out, etc etc etc. Sound familiar? (Halo)
@Darkened Heart, I will take it you don't like Michael Bay at all. Whats your beef with him? He makes cheesy entertaining, at time pointless flick, and makes a sh*t load of money for it? Transformers 2 was not mostly his fault. It was Ehren Krugers, and the writers strike. He just didn't help matters. Besides Transformers was already a bit camp and comedic in the several shows it spawned, and therefore didn't need to be taken seriously. Gears of War is totally different. Comparing the two, even if its due to a director that might make a decent GOW flick, is still pretty stupid.
@Bawnian, thats a retarded question. Batista can't act, same for 99% of anyone even related to WWE. So no, he wouldn't make a good one. Acting over size, as Len Wiseman wanted.
@Emmyt, its really hard to understand your post, but from what I could get, it sounds like you think this will be downgraded, and eventually turn into another flick altogether like Halo into D9... well I don't think that will happen. If it does, it has a high chance of sucking. D9 wasn't a fluke, but it was well thought out, and barely relatable to Halo except in gore/alien/action wise. Other than that... yeah.

What about 50 million, or just have big muscle guys run hide and shoot at nothing then add in the effects to make it look awesome and keep out the 3D effect it doesn't add anything to a film.
the games as just swearing and shouting orders, I see no real need to have a strong story since the game scripts are weak to begin with.
The first director is a coward no wonder he ran away, he doesn't believe it'll work.
