Is Sony Displeased with The Green Hornet Film?

The Green Hornet is still set to hit theaters nationwide on December 22, although it seems the studio isn't happy with the product thus far. IESB.net is reporting from sources that Sony Pictures are, "displeased with the results" of the film, which has already wrapped production. Here's an excerpt from the site's article.

The tone is too campy, they're not happy with the work from director Michel Gondry and Seth Rogen does not look the part. At all. In fact, the feeling at Sony is the movie is a disaster.

The site is also reporting that another comic book adaptation, Lobo, "won't be happening anytime soon." We reported back in January that director Guy Ritchie had abandoned the project to take on the fast-tracked sequel Sherlock Holmes 2. The site is now reporting that Warner Bros. is losing faith in producer Akiva Goldsman, which the site says is, "a direct result of their not-so-hot reaction to The Losers and especially Jonah Hex."

We'll be sure to keep you posted on any and all news regarding both The Green Hornet and Lobo as soon as we have more information.

The Green Hornet was released January 14th, 2011 and stars Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz, Tom Wilkinson, Christoph Waltz, David Harbour, Edward James Olmos, Jamie Harris. The film is directed by Michel Gondry.

Lobo is in development . The film is directed by Brad Peyton.

I guess I have nothing invested in the Green Hornet. I just thought the project sounded pretty fun with Rogen and Gondry attached.

ejk is right, the material can allow for a more serious take. The Green Hornet TV series is said by some to not have been as successful as Batman in the 60s because it was not as light hearted. It's got the typical 60s vibe but the stories are more serious and realistic, most centered around crime gangs. The Green Hornet is like an undercover cop, he plays a criminal just to get to the real criminals, so this alone should be enough reason for them to make him badass and not just plain funny.

Josh, your idea seems fine for a buddy cop movie, but this was supposed to be The Green Hornet. People have waited many years for this, and now it seems like they are getting screwed. All the other media(which includes radio, comics, and television) that the character has appeared in for over seventy years have shown serious tales of crime fighting. All of a sudden, they decided to take the character in a campy direction for the first big Hollywood movie? Sorry, but no dice. They should have stuck with what kept this property solid since the 1930's and gave the fans what they wanted in the first place. Now all they're left with is the hope of making the best out of a bad situation, while moviegoers are left feeling angry and annoyed.

A spoof and a superhero movie with a campy tone are two different things. I would picture this more like a lighter version in the style of Kick Ass, that's still an action flick with lots of crime fighting, but with a humorous "buddy cop" bend to it. Sort of like Rush Hour or Bad Boys.

HAHA, I said from day one that Rogen as the dumbest choice for the part. Even if it was a spoof I really have no interest in watching this.

It's Sony That Pick Seth Rogen To Do The Green Hornet And Sony Knew That Seth Rogen Was A Comic Actor And fore Sony To Say The Tone Is Too Campy Every Body Out There Trying To Keep This From Going Down That Path Of Campyness And Sony Studios Ignored Feed Back From Fans Who Wanted This Movie Done Wright !!.. Butt There's A Saying You Made Your Bed Now Lay In It !.

Hope it never sees the light of day. I don't care about the "campy" part but Seth Rogen should NEVER have gotten the role, EVER. How on earth did they think he could compete with Van Williams is beyond me... so yeah, if they're disapointed now, it's their own fault.

Just like Batman when it was shown on tv back in the 60's! That is the supposed definition of campy!

I don't really beleive this story. The studio knew exactly what to expect when Rogen was attached to this movie, I'm still up for it.

Sony allowed Rogen to play the Green Hornet. If it comes across as campy, then they have no one to blame but themselves.

How can they be thinking it's "too campy" when they originally attached Stephen Chow to direct? What were they expecting? The light tone was mostly what made me interested in this movie in the first place.

Plus not to mention, even though Seth Rogen is in this, I dont see a movie with Christoph Waltz, Edward Furlong, and Tom Wilkinson being a bad movie.

is it me or does IESB always post random rumors all the time? Most of them turn out to be not true.

This could just be rubbish. How many times have false rumors like this about films in production been posted on here? Until Sony make an actual statement, im taking this as a rumor.

thats bad but what do they expect Seth Rogen as a hero my ass

Wow. See this is why Rogen should have never been attatched to the film I mean he isn't an action guy. And As soon as he was cast I knew they'd make this campy. The character has the potential to be as cool as Batman and yet, they decided to go camp with it. There's a fan film out there that shows how it should have been done.
