Is James Cameron Calling the Avatar Sequel Nav'i?

Director James Cameron received the Visual Effects Society Lifetime Achievement Award over the weekend and the filmmaker also discussed a sequel to his current box office phenomenon. Sci Fi Wire spoke with the Avatar director at the event, who said that the sequel wouldn't be called Avatar 2.

"Certainly I don't want to call it Avatar 2," Cameron said at the Visual Effects Society Awards ceremony in Century City, Calif., on Sunday, where he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. "He's not an avatar anymore, is he? Maybe we'll call it Na'vi."

He also said that the sequel would likely focus more on the spiritual aspects of tne Na'vi population, which was a theme he had to cut back on in the first film.

"I think we can see that there's a greater receptivity to it on the part of the audience than certainly the studio originally imagined," Cameron said. "We pared back on it a fair bit in the first film, and I think we can go farther in that direction and not alienate people."

Cameron also commented on giving up control of the franchise at this point...

"I wouldn't do that for the second film," Cameron said. "It'd be premature to turn it over to somebody else right now. I think I'd have to use a film to train somebody to be able to take the reins, honestly. That's how I see it."

    But that "weird spiritual-ness" is central to their culture, and kind of the point of the movie.

    Josh, they already fleshed out characters and created a real world, as well as blow some stuff up. A good mix is what I'm asking for. But there is no need to go way deeper into the weird spiritual-ness that they had going on.

    "Visual Effects Society Lifetime Achievement Award"--wouldn't that be George Lucas?

    @Goliath, @ fanboy:
    Yes, heaven forbid they flesh out the characters and create a real, believable world instead of blowing up everything on screen for 2.5 hours. Go watch 2012.

    Maybe it should be called "The Last Samurai Dances With Wolves While Pocahontas is in Fern Gully". I don't care to see any more of the spiritual stuff. There little prayer chant around the tree was freaking weird. More story, more action, second wave of marines needs to show up and battle it out. Or even war it out with another race from a neighboring planet. Something cool and intense, not how the Mother tree talks to the Indians.

    Yeah, I saw a small cut from original film and I think this second one will be as free as a flying bee in terms of how the story plays... nice thrill there Cameron. Excited.

    @Fallen: "think it would be cool to exchange the process and put an Na'vi in a human Avatar." Interesting idea. Although, I think it's one of those instances where it could be either really cool or super cheesy. That also might give light to the potential title choice. I'd also like to see Earth in the next film.

    "This is your pony Cameron, ride that ass." Lol. And you deleted your own comment. Classic Zany. ;)

    As for the name, I actually like it more than Avatar... still think it would be cool to exchange the process and put an Na'vi in a human Avatar.

    It will be a very interesting film to watch. And I would like it if they do a prequel, tell the story of how they got there in the first place, and who, and how jake's bro got killed...but I don't know, that's just me.

    And then they can call the third film...Avatar 3D! It's perfect, right? Right!? ;P
    Honestly, I'm sure there's a better title than just "Nav'i," but I certainly have no qualms against it. As for handing over the reigns: this is your pony Cameron, ride that ass.
