With production scheduled to start in a few weeks, casting on Iron Man 3 is starting to heat up. Today we have word that Chinese superstar Andy Lau is in final negotiations to play an old friend of Tony Stark's, who helps him defeat The Mandarin.

It is said that the actor's unknown role, "represents the technology sector" of China. The Mandarin has been long rumored to be the villain of this sequel, although the role has not been cast yet.

If a deal becomes finalized, the Infernal Affairs star joins a cast which includes Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley, and Jessica Chastain.

Shane Black is directing from a screenplay by Drew Pearce. We reported last week that the sequel will be a Chinese co-production, although it is not known when shooting will start in China. Production begins in North Carolina in early May.

Iron Man 3 was released May 3rd, 2013 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Jon Favreau, Ben Kingsley, James Badge Dale. The film is directed by Shane Black.

@Brizzy@shuabert I completely agree. Mandarin IS IN THIS MOVIE. One way or another. I doubt as the main villain, but he must have some relevance in the story. After the Avengers movie, Tony Stark's realm will be much more open to the idea of "science and magic" (Isn't that what Thor used to describe his powers in his movie). I believe meeting Thor in Avengers and fighting Loki will dramatically open the Tony Stark universe in the movie to new concepts, eventually leading to Mandarin being set up for the fourth film.

And if they do tie him to the first Iron Man movie, that would be awesome. The "Ten Rings" were mentioned once or twice in that film, but with a modern twist of terrorist involvement.

@playhouse Yeah. I suppose they'll have done enough with Thor and Avengers as far as introducing Alien technology to Earth, so they could get away with having a really techy version of Mandarin and still be pretty faithful. If he is in the movie, though, I hope they tie it back in with Iron Man 1 a bit, because they hinted at the "ten rings" back in that film.

@bawnian-dexeus I was just asking if anyone thinks that Iron Man 3's random casting that's going on is a good thing or a bad thing. There's no reason for you to say "Shows how little you know".

First Iron Man 3 becomes a chinese co-production, then Ben Kingsley ( a copy of the bastard) joins the cast, and now Andy is gonna be in it. Keep denying it people, but Mandarin is in this one. Either in it or introduced for future plans.

@shuabert That's not to say they can't use the Mandarin. His rings were tech-based, though alien. And Mandarin was a scientific genius on par with Tony. Plus, they established a "real world" presence with the Ten Rings group in the first movie. It's not a significant stretch to see them possibly including the character in the movie.

Huh? Why are people still saying Mandarin will be the villain when Shane Black said Iron Man would be fighting a "real world, tech-based" antagonist in this third film?
