Indiana Jones 5 has George Lucas stumped.
"It's up to George. We have already agreed on the genre of the fifth movie, we already have a concept in mind. I don't know where George is with the story. There is no Indiana Jones 5 until George says there is."
George Lucas has now come forward to admit that the story has him stumped. While he has figured out a genre and a concept for Indiana Jones 5, he has not yet been able to find the perfect MacGuffin, the device (such as the Ark of the Covenent or the Crystal Skull) upon which to hinge the plot upon. And it may be a while before he settles on one.
"I really haven't found the MacGuffin yet. I mean, I know what it's about, but I just have to find a MacGuffin that fits into the arena we're working in."
When asked if Henry Jones, Jr.'s extended family would be playing a part in the story, George Lucas only had this to say.
"Yeah, we'll see!"
Indiana Jones 5 is in development .

@ghostman I'd be down for that. I like anything having to do with Atlantis and the Bermuda Triangle. The time travel thing I'm not sure about, even though most people believe the triangle itself to be some kind of worm hole, so in theory what you're saying could work. I'm just not sure if it's plausible for an Indy movie.

@ghostman: No offense, but that time travel thing sounds horrible. The thing that was cool about "ToD" was that a cult from the distant past was discovered to still be practiced to the extreme. Ya know, like a lost temple scenario. If they went with that sorta thing, it could quasi work, but Atlantis has been done to death, and as I said, there's no mystery about the Bermuda Triangle or even its most famous disappearing act. They should try for something we seldom hear of.

The idea for Atlantis would be that say Indy is on retirement and is soon sucked into the Bermuda Triangle that makes him travel back in time to Atlantis where he has to save the city from being destroyed by finding some sort of "MacGuffin Device" ala Temple of Doom, and on the side sub-plot, I'm assuming Shia LaBouf's character would be trying to save and rescue his dad? How does that sound?

@narrator I agree, I was dissatisfied with the ending also. The entire film, I thought, sort of tailed off in the last ten minutes. But I'm glad you mentioned the artifact and the adventure. That's actually the reason I think most people aren't in favor of the film, whereas I think it's probably the strongest aspect.
The crystal skulls are science fact. There are 13 known crystal skulls on the planet, all of which are carved from a single block of crystal with absolutely no tool marks, and of which are said to possess supernatural healing and other powers, just as in the film.
Modern science has recently proposed that these are, in fact, ancient alien artifacts, as they're origin can't possibly be explained by ordinary means. Most people, I think, mistake the Indy franchise as dealing in the biblical, when in fact, it deals in the occult. And they hate the fact that the film is about aliens, as they think it's a derivation from the Indy they grew up with, when it's actually the same. Even Raiders of the Lost Ark, to some extent, dealt in the occult, as Hitler was a firm believer in extra-terrestrials as well as the supernatural.
Everything in Crystal Skull as it pertains to the artifact and the adventure was cutting-edge, and something I think most people aren't quite aware of. Picking up in the 50s after Roswell was perfect seeing as Ford had aged, and it was the probably the most obvious direction to take the franchise, in my opinion.
