Ian McKellan Talks The Hobbit

Rotten Tomatoes recently spoke with actor Ian McKellan on reprising his role of Gandalf in The Hobbit, and he revealed that he'll be portraying an earlier version of the wizard, Gandalf the Grey.

"Grey Gandalf is my favourite," he told us. "Peter Jackson's too, we always preferred Gandalf the Grey. Peter liked him because he got down and dirty. He slept in the hedgerows; he was closer to the earth and not quite so spiritual. He's also funnier -- he's got more variety to him. We thought there was more scope in that Gandalf."

The Hobbit will be hitting theaters in December 2011 with The Hobbit Sequel to follow in 2012.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes to theaters December 14th, 2012 and stars Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

Obviously he's playing Gandalf the Grey. As if there would be any question.

Umm he acted exactly the same (funny, kind of a dick at times, wise) but had different colored clothes lol. If anyone is seriously arguing over this somewhere wow, they are reading WAY too much into it.

Yeah mikehd. But too bad they are only the theatrical releases, and not the extended cuts. They gotta make that money before they release those.

And Gandalf the Grey was way cooler. When he came back as Gandalf the White, the party was clearly over.

knobie09, I would love it if they would go with Ian Holm, just to keep continuity, but it sounded like they were going to re-cast the role. They could still go with Holm, even if he's older now, than in "The Fellowship of the Ring". They can do so much with CG, that they could just remove his wrinkles.

They did a good job with Bruce Willis in Surrogates. His Surrogate looked smooth and young. And remember Patrick Stewart in X-Men: Last Stand, in the flashback?

I don't think Smaug will have the impact that the dragon did in "Dragonslayer, due to the fact that there have been more CGI dragons and dinosaurs in the past twenty years or so, that it's become blas&#233.

"Reign of Fire" featured one of the best dragons though. I like the idea of combining two chemicals from the glands to create fire. That was inventive.
